The Europeans

 

While the origin of the Jews is clear, the origins of the Europeans is shrouded in mystery.  In fact, one has to go back to the origins of the species.  According to the ‘consensus’ opinion Homo Sapiens originated in Africa about 150K years ago.  At that point we are told they evolved from whatever species preceded them.  How and what happened next is anyone’s guess.

At sometime in the last 150K years the last Ice Age began that endured until the recent Age of Leo about ten thousand years ago.  Shortly after the Deluge of Leo fairly advanced communities began appearing around the Mediterranean shores.  This was after the Deluge.

Prior to the Deluge three significant memory traces of previous civilizations survive.  They are Atlantis, Lemuria and Shambala.  While no remains have been identified of the three it would still seem clear that something must have existed in the 140K years before the last Leo.  Thus I have to believe that all three memory traces had to have existed although the actual forms may be beyond recall, nor are any space visitors involved.

During the Ice Age the ice masses trapped enough water to lower ocean levels including the Mediterranean by three to six hundred feet.  This would have exposed the continental shelf in the Atlantic while exposing vast stretches of land on the Pacific shore.

Thus as Atlantis is said to have existed beyond the Pillars of Hercules, rather than being a vast island that sank it seems more reasonable to suppose that it existed on the exposed continental shelf.  It is conjectured that as the ice melted it remained dammed behind an ice barrier that breaking through released all at once a veritable ocean of water that raised sea levels very rapidly inundating the coastal regions and the Mediterranean.  Thus the notion that the wells under the earth gushed up becomes more intelligible.  Atlantis and Lemuria would have disappeared beneath the waves.

Shambala is said to have been an island in a large sea behind the Himalayas.  This would have been the home of the Aryans.  As is well known due to continental drift Africa has moved North and East from the ancient supercontinent Gondwanaland while Australia split off moving to the far side of the Indian Ocean.  Madagascar probably was formerly attached to Antarctica on the East and certainly Africa on the West.  India separated moving North and East.

Over a period of millions of years it collided with what was then South Central Asia.  The South of Asia and the North of the new sub-continent were then crumpled up into a long transverse group of mountain ranges stretching from the Alps of Europe into China.  The Himalayas formed by the collision of India with Asia formed the highest mountains in the world.

Behind the ranges the Black, Caspian and Aral seas have survived into our times.  The three seas form an arc so that it is not difficult to envision a fourth sea further East perhaps where the Talamakan desert is today.  At some time after the Deluge then if the memory traces are correct a place called Shambala or its equivalent did exist.  Whether the lake or sea in which the island of Shambala is supposed to have been was lush or dry the area was very likely lush enough to support a permanent city.  As the Himalayan Mountains rose to block precipitation northerly rivers still flowed North down the slopes from the glaciers.  Even today rivers flow from the Himalayas into the Taklamakan Desert where they are absorbed so life could have been supported well into the period of current desiccation.

When it became too dry the city would have broken up forcing the Aryans out.  As the Aryans moved from the area into China, India and parts West with a high level of civilization, a fully formed body of mythology they had to have before invading other areas.  They must formerly have had the leisure to form a history that is expressed in their mythology.  The various forms of that mythology from India to Europe are derived from that same source.  Indeed the languages from India to Europe come from a common source.  Nothing could be plainer.

The European then can confidently be traced back to a common source in Central Asia, possibly to the memory trace of Shambala.  The various European peoples arrived at different times in what was a very long diaspora, the Celts and the various German tribes.  In the course of time the Aryans were followed by the Mongols who possibly drove the Aryan before them.  First the Huns were driven West and then back out of Europe; then the hordes of Genghis Khan entered European history who also were forced to retreat, leaving Europe to the Europeans and…the Jews.

The two great mythological cycles that express the European mind are the Homeric and the Arthurian while the Old Testament of the Jewish bible gives expression to the Jewish mind.  They are very different in outlook.

Perhaps because the Homeric cycle is difficult to understand its immense worth is unappreciated even by the most cultured minds.  The Homeric cycle is one of the great achievements of the human mind.  While it is closely related to the Indian Aryan mythological cycle perhaps a variation in culture and other Indian additions make it more obscure to the Western Aryan mind.

In any event the simplistic Semitic vision of the Jews displaced the Homeric cycle in credibility; as impossible as that may seem, it became the foundation myth, at least, of Southern Europe while Northern Europe borrowing from the Caucasian remnant and Homer formed the vast, the immense, Arthurian cycle.

Thus the Jewish bible centered Christian religion and the medieval Aryan Arthurian cycle came into conflict.  This conflict was resolved by introducing certain biblical concepts into the Arthurian cycle subverting it to Christian ends.

The lineage of King David through Jesus of Nazareth in this story was transferred to Europe, not Europe as a whole but through what became England to the exclusion of Europe as a whole.  The kings and queens of England are, or were, believed to have inherited the sacred kingship of the line of David making England the new Israel.  Hence, one has the sect of the British Israelites.  Quite legitimate mythologically too.

To make the transfer, a myth was invented in which Joseph of Arimathea was said to have been given a chalice containing the holy blood of Jesus by Jesus himself.  Joseph of Arimathea then transported the chalice to England in a magical way making the English kings and queens of one blood with the House of David.  Thus England is the New Israel in that scheme of things.

On the other hand the ‘true’ story of the Grail was granted to Germany through someone called Kyot who appeared to the poet Wolfram von Eschenbach giving some authority to Germany.  Whether than has anything to do with the enmity the Jews cherish against Germans is open to conjecture.

The development of the Arthurian cycle took up most of the Middle Ages.  The last redaction was made by Mallory in the fifteenth century.  By then Europe was within striking distance of the Englightenment displacing mythology.

Leaping forward to that period it was then that the Aryan mind began to unfold in all its glory.  By then the European mind was ready to pass from the mythologic and mythopoesy of the biblical and Homeric mentalities to a rational understanding of external reality.  Thus the vanguard of the Enlightenment prepared the way for the Scientific outlook or Weltanschauung while Judaism and Catholicism remained sunk in subjective mythology.

The sixteenth, seventeenth and eighteenth centuries saw the development of the European mind into a splendor the like of which the world had never witnessed.  Truly, a New Man came into existence.  Godlike, as it were.

While a disruptive cleavage was necessary and inevitable political developments that erupted into the French Revolution of 1789 made the changeover the most destructive event the world had seen to that time.  A new murderous frame of mind came into existence.  The revolutionary bigots were cruel and merciless.  The bodies hit the ground and heads rolled in the sand.  This would set the tone for all future so-called revolutions.

The French Revolution evolved the reorganization of society that took place under the aegis of Napoleon.  When the Napoleonic world collapsed in 1815 it was a new world, bourgeois, and what has been called the Romantic Period.

The Romantic Period was a mythological reaction to the Enlightenment.  The Nixies and Pixies did not go quietly.  Frankenstein and Dracula rose in their stead.  The Nixies and Pixies throwing fairy dust put up a beautiful and entrancing if futile battle.  Science drove ahead.  Out of the demise of Medieval times arose one of the greatest achievements of the European mind, the University system.  The University was something that wasn’t even dormant in the world’s other societies, not African, nor Asian East and West.

The University allowed the brightest and best minds society had to provide a place to develop and innovate and discover.  For the first time intelligence was freed from superstition.

All the disciplines moved rapidly forward, Chemistry, Physics, Psychology, Botany, Anthropology, Geology, all of them.  These developments and sciences had to be organized into a system and that was done by a man called August Comte who established Positivism in competition with Romanticism.

Comte’s organization of the sciences was masterful; giddy with his sense of achievement Comte lost his cool nearly vaporizing in delusions of grandeur.  His great successor was the Englishman Herbert Spencer who carried things forward in a great leap.  By the time Darwin announced his vision of Evolution in 1859 the groundwork or future developments in learning was laid

The problem with Science and the Common Man is that most scientific concepts are uncommon, they can’t be seen or handled in the sense of, say, blacksmithing.  Of course machines and devices can be devised, microscopes and electron microscopes, so that things that Nature probably doesn’t even know are there can be seen but even the machines are beyond the comprehension of the Common Man.

So the world as it existed in religions like Judaism and Christianity was slipping away.  The Common Man’s world was being turned upside down.  Frustrated and uncomprehending he was supremely ready for manipulation.

After Darwin and Positivism came the New Romantics of the last quarter of the nineteenth century, a beautiful period of the human mind.  Unable to resist the findings of science the New Romantics blended science and fantasy in a very attractive fashion.  While it hasn’t really been given the attention it deserves the science of Psychology had been quietly developing and if not noticed at least not with alertness.

About the time of Darwin’s Origin Of Species the awareness of the conscious and unconscious minds was becoming more prominent.  First looming into human awareness through the researches of Dr. Anton Mesmer in the latter eighteenth century there was furious activity.  Central to psychology is the concept that Mesmer first exposed- hypnotism.  Hypnotism is the key to the unconscious.  Called variously hypnotism, Mesmerism and Animal Magnetism throughout the Nineteenth Century hypnotism is the basis of the unconscious.

While from Mesmer to Jean Martin Charcot  hypnotism had been derided as charlatanism suitable only for stage shows, Charcot working from the French hospital, the Salpetriere, legitimized hypnotism as a medical procedure.  He and the great Pierre Janet developed the basic concepts of what would be called psycho-analysis when organized by Sigmund Freud and C.G. Jung.

Psychology, hypnotism and the unconscious mixed perfectly with Neo-Romanticism.  Wonderful novels appeared.  The now neglected stories of the Frenchman, Camille Flammarion, R.L. Stevenson’s great Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde, the wonderful three novels of George Du Maurier of which his middle novel, Trilby, is a dream one wishes one could have dreamed, Marie Corelli wrote some wonderful stories, Sherlock Holmes probably fits in there as well as the Oz stories of L. Frank Baum.  Edgar Rice Burroughs’ Tarzan novels.  William Morris, Rider Haggard, an astonishing list of writers and their stories.  An amazing period.  H.G. Wells.

While Freud made the concept of the unconscious rigid, in the last half of the nineteenth century the unconscious was more fluid and flexible.  While Freud made it the repository of evil impulses, the early researchers made it a source of creativity.  It is actually an individuals’ choice.  One’s future hinges on that choice.

While these marvelous intellectual developments were in process the practical world was also changing rapidly.  Science turns into technology and technology turns into money.  Money turns into banking and the medieval world is left behind.

While money was significant in the medieval world, wealth in that world was land based.  One might say European wealth contrasted to Jewish wealth.  In the New Order money wealth would be dominant over land wealth, hence the rapid Jewish rise in the nineteenth century after Emancipation.

One might say that the need for money became necessary during the reign of Louis XIV in France.  Metals were no longer an adequate way to conduct business.  The man for the times was named John Law.  He introduced the concept of paper money.  Law was a Scottish adventurer who had thought deeply on money matters.  He came to the conclusion that the proper basis of money was what an economic unit, say France, could produce.  In fact his plan was activated in France.  While his scheme was sound if the money supply was kept in line with national production unfortunately Law issued more paper money than the market would bear and his plan went awry.  However paper money was here to stay as other thinkers began to work at the kinks in the money supply.

Thus the basis of the modern economic structure was laid.  Money and what it bought became the basis of our economic system.  With the money economy inevitably went compound interest or in another word, usury.  The conversion to money from land as a basis of wealth underwrote the destruction of the old European aristocracy that knew little of the functions of money or usury and the rise of the moneyed Jew.

The technological development of modern society was funded by money, not land.  The advent of steam, specifically the railroad called for vast sums to build the infrastructure.  In Europe only the Jews had the necessary cash although the need for money called for pooling of money which led to selling fractions of the roads to the general public as shares.    The shares led to the creation of an entirely new monetary device called the stock market- Wall Street in the US.  As a new device the stock market was a mystery to its users, not unlike computers today.  Coupled with the avarice of its users the market was and perhaps has been since a cause of great anguish.

In the course of things Europeans began sending its culture to various places in the world trying to make a better life for themselves perhaps not unlike these outlier communities who are now sending colonists to Europe seeking a better life  than they can provide for themselves there.  Six of one, half a dozen of the other.

The principal outlying European communities were in North America- Canada and the United States.  In inhabiting this very sparsely settled continent the Europeans merely shoved aside the indigenous stoneage peoples to occupy the land themselves.  This activity was still in process in 1800 when the unfolding of the European mind began in earnest.

Steam was actually first applied to locomotion in this raw land when a way was devised to apply steam power to a ship.

As revolutionary as this was it was as nothing compared to the steam railway.  The utility of the railroad was recognized by the Americans immediately.  Railroads sprang up in the original colonies and with them came the stock market.  After Lewis and Clark showed the way to the Pacific and the actual extent of the continent was known the westward move was on.  How extraordinary that the railroad would arrive just when it was needed.

The discovery of gold in California thirty-four years later called for a trans-continental railroad.  Nineteen years later, interrupted by a devastating Civil War of five years, there was one.  The trans-continental railroad was a vast undertaking calling for more money than any individuals, combines of individuals or even joint stock companies could manage.  Hence the assistance of the people through the US government was called for.  The country demanded the railroad.  The government supplied money while donating millions of acres of land to the builders from the public domain.  Of course there was graft; when isn’t there graft?  But the job got done in more than a timely manner.

While the Jews were firmly entrenched in Europe, they were very few in the US until after 1870.  As the Protestant United States had fluid mores, no landed aristocracy, while already as a trading people being somewhat familiar with  money and interest the Jews having lost their advantage had a negligible part in the economy until after the Civil War then developing rapidly with the influx of the East European Jews from 1870 to 1900 and beyond.

Thus by 1900 the German Jews were already established and while being in competition with the European Americans on equal terms began to assume a controlling and dominant role in the US and Canada.  The Jews led at least a semi-autonomous existence on both sides of the Atlantic, what Henry Ford would later accurately call the international Jewish conspiracy.

This whole race issue goes much deeper than that.  What was implied by Evolution was later confirmed by Darwin’s cousin Francis Galton.  Galton was a sociologist.  There has been no escaping the obvious conclusion which those condemned by biology to a lesser degree of mental ability find their inferiority intolerable.  Quite naturally the next step for the lesser endowed is to destroy those more favored by biology.

Darwin announced Evolution at a time of the highest level of White Supremacy among the world’s cultures.  In 1860 Whites were as gods to Africans, Middle Easterners, the Chinese and East Asia in general.  Had the superiority been a matter of surprise and temporary military efficiency as when the Mongol Huns overran Europe or when Genghis Khan’s hordes swept across Central Asia into Europe a military domination of that kind may be endured but it will pass.

However if one race or species is genetically advanced indicating permanence how can one measure the loser’s grief?  In point of fact one side must exterminate the other and it will happen as it is happening today.

Secondly Francis Galton began devising a means where the unseen could be measured; in other words he began to devise tests that could measure intelligence.  It would thus be learned that only fifteen percent of the White population had what might be termed superior intelligence; that is they could deal with abstract matters.  This was of cardinal importance in an increasing scientific and intellectual milieu in which fully eighty-five percent of the most capable race or species were mentally less able.  As for the other races they were completely out of the running.  These crude nineteenth century findings would later be confirmed by genetics in the next and twenty-first centuries.

Thus the horrors of the twentieth century German hatred began to form in the nineteenth century.  Discrimination against the superior took form.  In the course of history by the mid-nineteenth century the leading nations were France, England and Czarist Russia.  Italy and Germany still had no nation State but were a congeries of small principalities.  As pictured literarily as comic Ruritarians they were jokes to the French and English while allowing those countries to dominate a ‘balance of powers.’

Then both Italy and Germany unified into national States thus upsetting the balance of power.  The Germanies having united under Prussia’s Bismarck in 1871 avenged their humiliation by the Frenchman Napoleon by overrunning France thus announcing that a new sun had risen.

While the Germans had always evidenced an intellectual superiority in their cutting edge universities, now united they began to challenge England and France for industrial and commercial pre-eminence while at the same time the US was also trying to achieve economic dominance.  Thus England and France began to cultivate a German hatred.  This hatred was not directed at individuals but the German people as a whole.  As symbols of the German people Bismarck, Kaiser Wilhelm and Hitler might have had the force of hatred directed at their persons but only as an obvious object of German hatred.

After the First European Holocaust of 1914-18 the weak and divided Weimar Republic which may be seen as an extension of the comic principalities was tolerated but only because it had been completely emasculated thus no longer able to compete with the French, English and Americans.  Most of the criticism of Bismarck, the Kaiser and Hitler can be dismissed as anti-German envy.

In the East in order to develop their country the Romanov Emperors had invited several tens of thousands of German to settle in Russia in the Ukraine and the Volga Delta.  Thus there was a large Volga settlement as well as eventually a few millions in the Ukraine.  These immigrants were given favorable concessions to lure them to Czarist Russia.

The Germans employing superior intelligence and industry rapidly prospered more than the Russian and Jewish farmers.  Now, a slight aside, until mid-nineteenth century Jews named themselves Isaac ben Abraham and such but those who used no last names, Germans included, were required to assume a last name.  Russian Jews thus could choose either a German or a Russian last name.  As Germany was viewed as superior vast numbers of Russian Jews chose German last names rather than Russian offending the emperor.   One of these families were the Bronsteins, farmers in the Ukraine.  One Bronstein later took a Russian name calling himself Leon Trotsky.  Now, the Bronstein family lived across a ravine from a colony of German farmers.  In his autobiography Trotsky compares the sod huts and run down farming equipment of his family with the German farmers across the way.  He admiringly notes that their wood frame houses were well maintained and painted.  Even the farm equipment was well maintained and freshly painted as well.  The Germans working virtually the same land prospered more than his family and the other Russian or Jewish farmers in the area.

Given such a superiority it would have been only a matter of time until the Germans became the most wealthy of the Russian peoples while one presumes they would become prominent as Russian politicians.  Essentially occupying the position the Jews envisioned for themselves.  This apprehension enraged the Czars.  Thus by the 1880s the Czarist government began to harass, that is demean, their German population.  The benefits that had lured them to Russia were withdrawn.  While the German youth had been exempt from military service they were now drafted at the age of twenty-one.  Once in the military they were discriminated against, severely punished for minor infractions or perhaps no infraction at all.  This in turn caused large numbers of twenty year olds to return to Germany while those Germans remaining were persecuted under the Czars while under the Communists they were subjected to genocide before the German invasion.  Stalin deported them en masse to the gulags and essentially murdered the lot.  Genocide.  None of these crimes had anything to do with Hitler or the Nazis.  It was just German hatred because the Russians could not compete with them.  This also applies to the Jews who immersed themselves in German hatred because of their perceived inferiority.

Jewish German hatred was also in evidence from the nineteenth century on.  Jewish envy of the fabulous unfolding of the scientific European mind unmatched by anything Jewish drove them into a frenzy,  it totally contradicted their fantasy of their own superiority.

The envy has been made evident by today’s Paideia Foundation of Barbara Spectre in Sweden in which she hatefully condemns nineteenth century European brilliance that she describes as ‘European knowledge’ contrasting it with ‘Jewish knowledge’ that she is working to put on an equal basis with ‘European knowledge’ by legislation.  She says this must be done so that Jews won’t be shamed by the contrast.

Unable to surpass European scientific knowledge the Jews tried to subject scientific knowledge by injecting Jewish religious interpretations.

The problem was reaching crisis level at century’s end.  At the time of Darwin’s announcement of Evolution Patriarchalism was firmly established having triumphed over Matriarchalism during the Arien Age.  Matriarchalism had been forgotten, erased from the memory, until memory traces were detected after Darwin by the brilliant Swiss mythologist, J.J. Bachofen.  Resistance to Bachofen’s rediscovery was very strong not receding until after 1950.  Behind Matriarchalism Bachofen also detected an earlier stage of mental evolution he called Hetaerism or one of shared use of women.  This would have been a form of communism or collectivism that may be natural to humans.  Communism too was suppressed in the West in favor of Individualism and private property.

The communist mentality submerged reemerged out of the French and Industrial Revolutions taking the form of Socialism in reaction to the other natural order of things, that is, Individualism and private property that Socialists labeled Capitalism depicting it as evil.  Just as Socialism failed in the Hetaeric period so it fails in the modern age.  Nevertheless the Socialist party was captured by the Jews who then used it to defeat the European order of things.  This was achieved in 1917 but the conflict was reaching a head at the turn of the century.

This spawned two unique events, to take the lesser first:  Then as now the Jews infiltrated all European establishments.  Having done so all European information, plans and so forth were made known to them while Jewish information and plans was more or less impenetrable to Europeans.  Or perhaps they were just comfortable and invulnerable in their superior position.

Posing as European national patriots this information, spying, was shared by the International Jewish Organizations.  Thus in 1895 the French military discovered that a Jewish army officer was spying.  This was true, but the French accused him of spying for the Germans, this was not true.  Like all other Jewish spies Dreyfus was passing the information to Jewish organizations who were thus informed as to the intents of in this case the French government but other national governments were infiltrated in the same manner.  Thus the Jews were able to control or at least direct the course of events.

Thus in the twentieth century the Jews, Johnathan Pollard, was spying for the Jews in the US.   The Jews, Israelis, then used this information for their own world wide purposes.  When caught Pollard was sent to prison where he remains today despite all Jewish attempts to free him.

Dreyfus was convicted and sent to Devil’s Island.  This set off a colossal effort to reverse the decision that split France into Dreyfusards and anti-Dreyfusards while becoming an international cause celebre.  Eventually toward century’s end the Jews triumphed freeing Dreyfus.  The Dreyfus Affair went far toward giving the Jews parity or semi-autonomy in France, having shamed the French, and actually throughout the West.

The second major event was the success of the Austrian based Jew Theodore Herzl in setting up Zionism after 1895 which being embraced by the Jews of Russia furthered the revolutionary Jewish war against Russia.  It is highly probable that a document that came into importance in 1917 was written at this time.  This document was the infamous Protocols Of The Learned Elders Of Zion.  I think the word Zion in itself gives away its provenance.  No members of the Russian secret service, the Okhrana, posited as a possible author would have been aware of the importance of Zionism at the time the Protocols were written.  It had to be the Jews.

Herzl, the founder of Zionism was Viennese.  Vienna, at the time was home to Sigmund Freud as well as being a center of furious Jewish activity coordinating the transfer of the Jews of the Pale to the US.  1895-96 was nearing the height of Jewish emigration from Russia to the US.  Vienna not surprisingly also had a very active lodge of the Jewish International Order of B’nai B’rith, a sort of Jewish Freemasonry.  Sigmund Freud had a deep abiding hatred of Europe and Europeans.  He would have exterminated them all and after 1917 he got his chance.  In 1895 Freud joined the B’nai B’rith lodge of which he remained a member all his life attending the weekly meetings.  This would give B’nai B’rith almost equal importance to Freud as his weekly meetings of his Psycho-analytic Order.

Freud said he joined because he had found a lodge of men like minded to himself.  Thus one must think, they wanted the destruction of Europeans too.

Also in 1895 Theodore Herzl the founder of Zionism wrote his book The Jewish State published to acclaim in 1896.  The Jews had been agitating for the overthrow of the Russian State for decades, assassinating a Czar or two along the way.  In 1903 Zionism already the Eastern Jewish religion, the First Russian Revolution was generated by the Jews.

The Protocols Of The Learned Elders Of Zion first saw light at the end of the revolution in 1905.  The document made no impression at that time having to wait for the Second Russian Revolution in 1917.  At that time the Jews indignantly labeled the Protocols a forgery of the Car’s secret service, the Okhrana, written in Paris using the Dialogues as a template.  A huge mystery has been created around the Protocols making it difficult to solve the problem of provenance for which no satisfactory solution has ever been made.  I propose the solution here.

Knowing that they would be accused of fomenting the First Russian Revolution, which they did, the Jews anticipated the need for a red herring to confuse the issue.  I don’t know whether Theodore Herzl was a member of B’nai B’rith but I wouldn’t be surprised if he was.

At any rate we have a group of likeminded men one of which was the master propagandist Sigmund Freud.  Freud was well along in the development of his psychological ideas while he would become the master propagandist of all time.  It might be said that he directed or coordinated the propaganda campaign from Vienna though personal encounters as well as his hugely influential writings.

The Protocols are written in a heavy handed Jewish manner that seems authentic enough.  Since Freud either directed or had a hand in directing the revolution of ’17 and its brutal aftermath there is every reason to conjecture that he had a hand in concocting the Protocols.  The Protocols once disseminated had a two fold purpose.

On the one hand they could be used to ensnare the European reader so that he could be denounced as an anti-Semite for believing such ‘an obvious forgery’ as was Henry Ford and on the other hand as a manual of instruction for Jewish revolutionaries hidden in plain sight.

It has been claimed that the Protocols are based on an earlier 1860s book The Dialogues Between Montesquieu and Machiavelli In Hell said to have been written by the Jew Maurice Joly in 1860s France but this is poppycock.  There is little similarity between the two while it isn’t improbable that the book was written after the fact to mystify the Protocols.  It was announced that the Protocols were based on the Dialogues however the Dialogues were non-existent, no extant copy could be found.  Thus a dramatic search was conducted to find the Dialogues to prove the provenance of the Protocols.  It was positively stated that this book that no one had ever seen would do this.  After several fruitless searches through all the libraries of Europe a copy was said to have been found in the British Library.  Obviously this was as stage managed as finding the record ‘An Old Shoe’ in the Library of Congress in the movie Wag The Dog.

If one were to transpose the story of the Protocols into Wag The Dog the story would be nearly identical.  In Wag The Dog Washington politicians wanted a phony war to influence an election.  They call the imaginative people in Hollywood and ask if they can dummy up a war until after the election.  As the powers can control the media the unsuspecting public is fed canned news that no one can check out for accuracy stirring the public into a patriotic fervor.  The producers dummy up a hero named Shoemacher.  He is to be the returning hero.  In order to drum up support the producers get their musical hacks to dummy up a song sounding like a twenties country song called ‘Good Old Shoe.’  This song is recorded then aged to sound appropriate to an old 78 RPM.   The record is then placed in the Library of Congress where it is miraculously discovered becoming an immediate hit.

There in a nutshell you have the story of the Protocols Of Zion.  I conjecture that the Protocols were dummied up in the Lodge of B’nai B’rith probably under the supervision of master propagandist Sigmund Freud.  As they are called The Protocols of Zion it seems positive they were written no earlier than at least 1898 or shortly thereafter.  A copy was then given to the Russian priest Sergei Nilus who appended them to the end of a book he wrote where they were ‘discovered’ in 1905.  As the revolution failed they were apparently not needed so saved for the 1917 revolution at which time when the suckers took the bait they were denounced as raving anti-Semites hence sub-human or less.  Animals, my god, pure Animals.

When the need for a predecessor document was needed the idea of the Dialogues was invented.  After a long exciting search, I’m not going to go into the whole story here, through all the libraries of Europe the single copy that escaped destruction by Napoleon III was unearthed in the British Library.  Sound anything like Wag The Dog?

The Jews ruthlessly pursued the Czar in the years leading up to the 1903-05 Russo-Japanese War which they fomented.  On the one hand labor unrest was driven to a fever pitch as the Japanese were stirred up.  To finance the war the Czars needed loans.  The Jews withheld loans while admonishing the European bankers to withhold loans also.

Now, at the turn of the century the safe haven of the US became the base of operations for the international Jewish conspiracy as Henry Ford said.  While the Japanese wanted to war on the Russians they lacked the means to pay for one.  Here the US Jew Jacob Schiff of the Investment Banking firm of Kuhn, Loeb stepped up to the plate.  Schiff was a trustee of the Equitable Life Assurance Society.  The Equitable had two hundred million in reserves that Schiff appropriated to lend to the Japanese clandestinely.  They attacked and defeated the Russians but the revolution coordinated to the Japanese attack failed.

So Jewish vengeance was delayed for a decade or so.  The First Russian Revolution would lead to the First European Holocaust of the Great War or what would later be called WWI.

     That Edgar Rice Burroughs is one of the, if not the most, influential  writers, America has produced goes without saying.  The only question is in how many different ways did he do it and was an attitude toward sexual mores one of them.  I think it can be shown that that is true.  Was Burroughs an ideologue in sexual matters.  At this point I can’t say yes or no although his attitudes seem consistent throughout his career.

     A first hurdle we have to get over is whether Burroughs was some sort of idiot savant who just had the knack for writing adventure stories  or was he an auto-didact who educated himself in exemplary fashion.  The consensus is more along the idiot savant line which I hope I have shown in my by now voluminous writings that ERB was very well read, had a sound if not spectacular education while being an intelligent man with at least a 120-130 IQ.  

 

Greeks At Play

    I think I have shown that he was a full participant in the intellectual culture of 1875-1920 which influenced the first phase of his writing career.  We know he was well read because he references  hundreds of books that he read in his own pages.  He tells us he read Gibbon’s  Decline And Fall Of The Roman Empire which is an essential for a liberal education.  He tells us he read and reread Plutarch’s Parallel Lives which also is no mean achievement.  Those may be isolated instances or, as I think, they are the tip of the iceberg.  He was near expert on Evolution while being deeply read in esoteric and exoteric religion.  The guy was a virtual marvel.  His learning shows up in his writings although in a fantastic manner for enterainment purposes.

   For our purposes here we can begin when his father placed him in the Harvard Latin School of Chicago.  He was to spend what we would call his Junior High years there.  It was there he learned Latin and possibly some Greek.  He was to complain later that he learned Latin before he learned to write in English which he thought affected his style and it may have as some of his writing reads like he was translating from Latin.  While he may not have qualified as a Latin scholar I’m sure that for the rest of his life he could find his way through an extensive Latin quotation.  When I was in school that was considered an achievement of a high order.  So ERB had a pretty decent founding in the Classics.

     Now, there has been a pretty fair controvercy on ERBzine recently over how nude Martians were.  I don’t think there is any question but that both men and women hang out, that is ventral and dorsal nudity.  One might therefore infer that in Burroughs’ vision of an utopia the style was to be au naturel.

     Was this original or did ERB, as usual, borrow from the culture, have his sources?

     Let’s start at Harvard Latin School.  At the time the Patriarchy was in full control of the culture.  There were grumblings from both the Matriarchy and the Hetaerarchy but those were in the beginning stages of the revolt.  As late as the 1960s when I was an Ancient History major you would have been thrown out of school for challenging the Patriarchal version of Ancient History, that is to say Greek and Roman.  ERB then couldn’t have been given less than a 110% Patriarchal education.

     Any illustrations of Greek statues he would have seen showed the genitals fully exposed unless a fig leaf had been placed over them.  The Greek vases he may have seen would have shown Greek men at play or leisure with fully exposed genitals, any weapons belted on would look exactly like his Martians.  They might have a wrap thrown over the shoulder for protection from inclement weather.

     The phallicism, the pride in manhood, runs all through Greek art and literature.  At the time men were liberating themselves from the Matriarchy with its cruel attitude toward the males.  It had been discovered that the male inseminated the female so men claimed the child as theirs while the women were mere incubators or storehouses rather than the fecund goddesses of creation.  Man was the creator.  That was the answer the riddle posed by the Theban sphinx to Oedipus was, Man.  So the psychological reaction must have been if you’ve got one, show it.  Meanwhile as the man was the progenitor of a woman’s offspring, a man’s wife had to be secluded so that another man couldn’t impregnate her.  Whereas in the past women were more or less commonly available to the certified they now became the exclusive possession of one man, except for prostitutes or hetaerists.   The children were his.

     How much, if any, of this ERB understood he at least saw a society where the men went fully nude.  As the Martian children were hatched from eggs incubated in the Martian sun it sounds as though he had read Plato where Socrates expatiated on the old days when men and women were hatched from eggs.  Indeed, Leda impregnated by Zeus in the form of a swan hatched two eggs that produced Castor and Pollux and Helen and Clytemnestra as two sets of twins.  It’s not too far from there to Mars, don’t you think?

     Around the turn of the century the Nudist movement took form in German.  We tend to think of these earlier times as staid when in reality the modern world was in its birth throes.  The nudity thing since the French Revolution had been slowly growing.  For the Medieval Free Spirits and Anabatists nudity was a key point as it was for the Libertines and as it was adopted by the Communist offshoots of the Revolution.  Men want to look at the female nude.

     In Germany at the turn of the century the nudity movement jelled, an actual movement taking shape in conjunction with the Wandervogel movement.  This is turn led to the development of the Nature movement resulting in the incredible Nature Boy scene in the US of the thirties and forties which in turn evolved into the Beat/Hippie phenomenon of the fifties, sixties and seventies and into today.

     Burroughs would have been aware of this whole phenomenon up to 1950 endorsing it enthusiastically.  Tarzan was the ultimate Nature Boy and Burroughs developed the character with that in mind.  The ideal.  I have no douts that Burroughs intended him as the exemplar of this growing movement.  Hence the development of the Nature movement was aided, abetted and intentionally forwarded by ERB clearly linking him to the scene in Bohemian NY of the sixties and the whole Beat/Hippie scene.

     So Burroughs’ writings actually promote nudism and the Nature movement throughout his career.  John Carter arrives, born again, nude on Mars where he would have been unnoticeable on that account, completely blending in.  Indeed, the only difference was that he was white instead of red which was a curiosity.  Thus, as soon as he leaves Earth he become a nudist in what was a sort of utopian society to Burroughs.

     Tarzan necessarily practiced nudity for his first twenty years, only donning his ‘fig leaf’ or G-string  when he came in contact with civilization.

      Burroughs always refers to Tarzan’s ‘adornment’ as a G-string in the early novels.  A G-string only cover the genitals with a flap and not the rear so Tarzan was essentially nude in the jungle.  He was a Nature Boy and that is the way most of his readers have perceived him.

    The MGM Tarzan is the exemplar of the Nature Boy living on fruit and nuts.  The MGM movies regularly show bowls of fruits and nuts while Tarzan, unless memory fails, is never shown squatting over a haunch eating the flesh raw as in Burroughs’ novels.  As with Burroughs and the Nature Boys Tarzan rejects all the appurtenances  of civilization except for some mechanical engineering at which Tarzan was apparently a genius.  Might even have been a Nuclear Physicist even though he could barely grunt in the MGM movies.

     It seems clear that there was vitually no one who hadn’t heard of Tarzan or Burroughs.  Nearly everyone was influenced by the two.  It therefore seems probable that the Nature Boys, the nudists took Tarzan as an avatar.

     Certainly John Derek directed his movie, Tarzan, The Ape Man of the 1980s, concentrating on the sexual and nature aspects of the image.  No argument there, I hope.

     Now, the Bohemian scene in NYC was among other things a return to the primitive.  The crowd surrounding Andy Warhol in his Factory was a bunch of savages stripped of all but the rudiments of civilization.  They were the Tarzans of the asphalt jungle.  The more affluent savages, the Haute Boheme lived a life of sexual abandon that Burroughs, Wells and Freud could only have dreamed of, and they did dream of it.

     Once the attitude was institutionalized at Studio 54 the world Burroughs, Wells and Freud longed for was realized.  It was Hetaerism and Matriarchialism on wheels, a complete overthrow of Patriarchalism.  Our three musketeers would have gained easy admitance and found each in his own particular utopia.  From 1880 to 1980 was only a hundred years.  A short time indeed to overturn civilization.

     Burroughs was a leading figure in this revolution.

 

 

Four Crucial Years

     There was a tremendous rush of events at this time which would shape the future of not only ERB but of the Burroughs Boys.

     The signficance of the first of these would have passed unrecognized by any of the Burroughs.  This was the election of Frank Steunenberg as the govener of Idaho in 1896.  Steunenberg brought the Burroughs Boys into an association with his name when he appointed them representatives at a mining conference.  The boys were thus connected with the anti-Western Federation Of Miners forces.

     In 1899 in Coeur D’ Alene up near the Canadian border a terrific showdown occurred between the mineowners and the WFM.  This is an exciting story.  For details see the autobiography of Big Bill Haywood, ‘Big Bill’s Book’, Clarence Darrow’s autobiography and Charlie Siringo’s autobiography, ‘A Cowboy Detective’.  Very rewarding books, especially Charlie Siringo’s.

     Steunenberg called in the Army to crush the union thereby incurring their hatred.  On December 30, 1905 as returned home from Office he opened his mailbox and disappeared into thin air from the bomb blast.

     There is yet no conclusive proof that the Burroughs Boys found it expedient to vacate Idaho for fear of the WFM but at any rate they chose to leave.

     ERB formed a distaste for Big Bill and for the IWW which Bill headed after leaving the WFM as a result of the bombing.  ERB never gives up lambasting the IWW.  The character of the Sky Pilot in the ‘The Oakdale Affair’ is undoubtedly based on Haywood.

     The second of these events was the really stupendous story of the discovery of gold in the Klondike in July 1897.  By the beginning of 1898 a hundred thousand or so prospectors including Jack London set off the fabled Big Rock Candy Mountain in the Yukon.  This last of the great gold rushes probably fired the imaginations of the Boys who were having a very difficult time of making their cattle ranch go.  They would shortly abandon ranching, building a mammoth dredging raft to sift the bottom of the Snake River for any spare flakes and nuggets.

     What effect this had on the mind of ERB is difficult to assess although the Tarzan novels are filled with episodes of found gold and diamonds.  Most notably Tarzan uses the gold of Opar as his personal bank.  He perhaps found his brother’s seach for gold curious.  He didn’t seem to catch the fever at the time.

     On top of these two items the Maine was sunk in Havana harbor on February 15, 1898.  The legendary newspaper publisher William Randolph Hearst had been beating the drums for war and now got it.  The sinking of the Maine may have been the spur that caused ERB to petition Capt. Smith for an appointment.  The Spanish American War agitated his military ambitions as he tried to get that elusive officer’s appointment.

     As he left home again in 1898 ERB was 22 soon to be 23.  Time was passing.  He was no longer a boy but having been coddled as a youngest son and brother he was having difficulty making the transition to a responsible young man.  Not unusual, but true.  He was in that difficult learning period of 21-25 when great demands are made on one’s developing maturity.  Somehow when one turns twenty-five one had better have learned enough to make it from there.  How well I remember crossing that bar from youth to maturity.  What a kick in the pants it was.  Don’t know how I made it or, perhaps, if I have.

     Unfortunately for ERB any maturity he was to experience was well in the future.  Perhaps he never really made the transition.  He had no money of his own.  He would have had to ask his dad for fare and traveling money.  He was used to being supported, just asking for the money he needed.  We will now come on several examples.

      Young ERB was one light headed son-of-a-gun.  His route took him through Denver.  There he met an Army buddy from Fort Grant who had been a member of his Might Have Seen Better Days Club.

      This was apparently a joyous reunion as the two got roaring drunk, hired a brass band then marching behind it paraded through the streets of Denver.  Always seemingly conversant with the seamy side of town he and his friend blew whatever money they had remaining  in a gambling dive.  Now broke, he blithely  wired his brothers in Idaho asking for more money to continue his journey.  As he already had his ticket this fifty dollars represented the equivalent of an easy five hundred today, perhaps a thousand.  It was pocket money to him.

     What effect this stunt had on his family’s evaluation of him is open to conjecture.  ERB was no longer a kid; he ought to have been showing some sober responsibility.  I’m sure the story reached Chicago where possibly the Hulberts heard of it thanking their lucky stars the ne’er do well had checked out of their daughter’s life leaving the way clear for Frank Martin.  Wishful thinking.

     I don’t think ERB gave it another thought, probably laughingly telling his brothers about it while I am sure they looked at him with puzzled astonishment.

     As Porges notes they had little use for him on the ranch or could not afford to pay him wages, which is to say give him money which they had not factored into their expenses.

     Events were now crowding fast on ERB.  On April 19th, 1898 Congress authorized the war on Spain.  Burroughs once again appealed to Colonel Rogers as his best bet to get him a commission.  Rogers fobbed him off, nothing coming of his appeal.  Hearing of Teddy Roosevelt’s formation of the Rough Riders Burroughs sent an appeal to him which was once again a rejection.  The military was and would remain a mirage.

     Had he been accepted either his father or his brothers would have had to provide transportation and incidental money.  I’m sure one of them may have done it but there would have been no guarantee that ERB wouldn’t gamble it away en route, cabling for more.

     The Boys were not flush, as Porges relates.  They had borrowed a thousand dollars from their father, use your multiplier for today’s equivalent, on which they were unable to make the principal payment, instead sending their dad the interest only which was a fairly steep 8%.  Technically since they couldn’t meet the obligation they were bankrupt.  Nevertheless brother Harry, who seemed to be a much softer touch than brother George, bought ERB a stationery story in Pocatello.  Porges doesn’t give any financial details but perhaps it was at this point that ERB gave Harry his note for three hundred dollars.  It is quite probable that this money also came from George T. who wished to remain anonymous.  Harry may just have forwarded the note to Chicago.  The loan was never repaid; George T. presented the canceled note as a Christmas present a decade later.

     ERB was to keep the store for six months.  Those six months were probably very important to him intellectually.  He later said he wasn’t cut out to be a retailer but he did keep the store for six months selling it back to the former owner at that time.  If the owner bought it back for the three hundred then ERB kept the money never retiring the note.

     The evidence indicates that Burroughs gave the business his best shot.  He seems to have advertised well while developing contacts to the point that he could offer to obtain any book or magazine from the U.S., Canada or England.  Although he advertised statewide, how much demand there may have been for any magazines other than the most common ones is questionable.

     Once again, details of this period are tantalizingly lacking.  Porges says that ERB made at least one trip to Salt Lake City in this period.  One would like to know why.  What need was there for him to incur the expense of such a trip.  As impractical as he was he probably spent one or two hundred dollars out of the till which would better have gone to developing the business.

     One would like to know what he read at this time.  It would be of interest to know how many different titles of magazines he actually stocked.  What books other than Capt. King’s he sold.  He appears to have studied Darwin’s Descent Of Man at this time although the volume he used was twenty years old.  It still may have been bought new for the store, I suppose.  On the fly leaf he drew a picture of an ape labeled Grandpa which shows he was giving it some thought.

     Darwin was being much discussed as ERB obviously incorporated later thought into his drawing.

     One would like to know was the store making money?  At any rate when the former owner returned to Pocatello at the beginning of 1899 ERB was only too happy to sell it back to him.  What did he do with the money?  I’m sure he could have found a poker game somewhere in Pocatello.

     When he returned the store to the former owner he became superfluous to his brothers who couldn’t afford to pay him as a ranch hand.  He now had no real place in Idaho.  He began to think of returning to Chicago.  Though he may have exasperated family and friends with his erratic behavior, behind his nonsense his mind was busily at work absorbing the tremendous range of influences occurring on a daily basis.

     Important among these was the West’s relationship to the world.  While the Spanish American war was intended to free Cuba, an unintended consequence was the acquisition of the Philippine Islands as a colony or ‘possession.’  Other countries had colonies, the US had possessions.

     Rudyard Kipling who had toured the US in 1889 beginning in San Francisco moving East had formed some very definite impressions of the country and its inhabitants.   In February of ’99 in connection with the Philippines he published his very famous poem The White Man’s Burden.  The US had been traditionally anti-imperialist, except moving West, condemning England most severely but now faced with Philippine intransigence the country was involved in a brutal war of suppression.  Perhaps reacting to taunts of colonialism against the English Kipling wrote what can be viewed as a mocking poem.

     Anachronistic when published on the eve of the twentieth century, it was reflective perhaps of an earlier intellectual climate.  Burroughs reaction was immediate reflecting a deep, if not long, he was only 23, reflection on the problem.  The Pocatello paper printed his response shortly after the original appeared.  This was apparently written in white hot heat.

     As the response is a synopsis of his later views I will reproduce both poems for comparison with comments.  If mocking, Kipling still presents a bright or positive side of the European invasion of Africa and the East.

     Burroughs response to Kipling may also explain why he refused to join a Pocatello volunteer regiment destined for the Philippines and the assumption of the White Man’s burden.  Burroughs is accused of an excess of pride in refusing to join the regiment because he would have to serve under a man he didn’t like, a good enough reason for me, by the way.  One doesn’t know the details but possibly his fellow volunteers refused to make him an officer.  His local reputation may have been such that his fellows had no confidence in him.

     Also pertinent I believe is the fact that while the war in Cuba was to free the Cubans from Spanish tyranny, the war in the Philippines was to crush the freedom of the Filipinos.  As Burroughs’ answer to Kipling clearly demonstrates he was opposed to the imposition of  Western values on native peoples.  The Tarzan novels should be read in the light of this answer.

     While Kipling’s poem has been much derided by the moribund Liberal establishment with no attempt at placing it within a historical context it nevertheless does express certain truths.  Whether misguided or not, unlike all previous conquests, the White Man with his superior scientific consciousness did try to uplift the peoples they conquered rather than merely exploiting them on their own established historical model.

     The poem is an interesting example of evolution in progress before the reaction against the West began.  Darwinian evolution, you know, does not only apply to the past and other species, it also applies to the present and humankind.  Kipling himself does not appear to have absorbed the new scientific learning.  He was eleven years older than Burroughs, but his parodist was thoroughly imbued with evolutionary ideas having, apparently, just read The Descent Of Man.  The final quatrain:

Peruse a work of Darwin’s

Thank gods that you’re alive-

And learn the reason clearly-

The fittest alone survive.

indicates this.

     While biographer Taliferro believs that Burroughs got no further in the Descent Of Man than drawing a picture on the title page the quatrain would indicate a much deeper familiarity.  ‘A work of Darwin’s’, Darwin wrote several books, points to a wider reading of the evolutionary scientist than just the Descent.

     So at some time before reaching the age of 25 ERB had obviously been immersing himself in evolutionary reading and speculation.  He may have been flighty but he was industrious and intelligent.

     The advice to the subject races is peculiar while being ambiguous.  On the one hand he advises them to take up Western learning, which as they haven’t makes them unfit, while on the other hand he implies that they have not been exterminated because they are the fittest.

     The bright side of the Western subjugation of the peoples is clearly and accurately presented by Kipling who had much more experience in the wide world than Burroughs.  On the other hand one tends to underestimate Burroughs whose brief experience in Apacheria is still analogous to Kipling’s in India.

     On an evolutionary basis the West’s conquest of the world represented a radical departure from the historical model.  Prior to and outside the West the world’s conquerors had been mere freebooters who plundered and destroyed while contributing nothing to their subject peoples who were most frequently intellectually superior to the invaders.

     Thus Attila was merely an incubus on Western civilization whose potential was wholly destructive.  His reputation cannot be rehabilitated.  Genghis Khan and his successors inhibited the development of superior civilizations dragging the subject peoples back toward more primitive conditions.  The crimes the Golden Horde committed against the Russians are atrocious.  But that is why the Liberals love them better than the West.

     As Kipling states, athe West conferred solid benefits on the subject peoples.  It imposed superior organization, scientific methods and standards although today, after several hundreds of years resistance, through the superior methods of the West certain areas are profiting.  Not many though.

     In the terms most people relate to, famine has all but disappeared- this through no efforts of their own- through Western medicine billions lead more comfortable lives, certain diseases have disappeared while most others can be treated- through no efforts of their own- these benefits have been a gift, a boon from the West.

     The prevalence of fevers gave sub-Saharan Africa the name of the White Man’s Grave but in fact no people could prosper in the African climate.  Even the native Blacks, who one would assume, should have acclimated themselves over their hundred fifty thousand year existence seldom lived past forty.  They were incapable of creating medicine before the White Man arrived and they are incapable of even manufacturing the White Man’s medicine today.

     So that, while Kipling’s poem is denigrated today as an example of ‘racism’ by the Red-Liberal ideology, apart from the insufferable condescension it is an accurate description of the altruistic role played by the West in civilizing the world.

     Reacting to the poems apparent insufferableness as much as anything Burroughs counters it by listing the negatives which are as real as the positives but with no material value.   Once again the negatives are inconsequential compared to the brutality of the Mongol conquests in the West.  One has only to glance over the wars of Tamerlane to arrive at some sort of balance, one hopes.

     Burroughs is ostensibly taking the side of the subject peoples but in reality he identifies with the defeated accepting their defeat at the hands of the West as analogous to his defeat at the hands of John the Bully.

      This view would relieve the lines:

Thank gods that you’re alive

And learn the reason clearly-

The fittest alone survive.

of some of their ambiguity because what he is saying is that he has survived comparable conditions- he still lives as he has his characters say repeatedly.  Therefore he is one of the fittest if not superior to his conqueror.

     Thus beneath the foolery and compulsive failure caused by his 1884-85 confrontation the true Edgar Rice Burroughs is struggling toward Bethlehem and rebirth.  It may in fact be no coincidence that the initials of both John Carter and John Clayton are JC.

     In the Spring of ’99 he can only put together this parody of another man’s work where it touches his fixations most directly.

     For the present, after the roundup our wandering boy pulled up stakes yet again to return to Chicago.  Who bore the expense isn’t clear.

A Review:

On Tarzan

     This book reads almost like the cover of The Doors LP Strange Days.  You’ve entered into some kind of literary twilight zone.  This is perhaps the most eccentric book I’ve ever read.  I can’t believe it was actually published- and by a University press!

     Alex Vernon has a PhD and is an Associate Professor at Hendrix College.  Must have been founded by Jimi before he OD’d.  I’m flabbergasted that the guy has a  job.  Average looking Joe from the back cover.  Happy, smiling.  Doesn’t look like he’d be sex obsessed  but it could be a problem for him.

     The phallus on the cover dismayed me but prepared me for the sex driven content.  Zany, zany, zany.  A large phallus rises out of what might be the swamp, symbol of the female, or perhaps jungle growth meant to represent pubic hair.

     When Vernon says On Tarzan he doesn’t mean Tarzan by Edgar Rice Burroughs he means Tarzan as a ‘living’ entity to which history Burroughs is only one contributor albeit an important one,  Philip Jose Farmer almost eclipses Burroughs as a contributor to the Tarzan ethos in Vernon’s mind.  Mainly for Farmer’s outrageous sex episodes.

     Tarzan ethos is about it.  Everything is thrown indiscriminately into the stew pot.  Books, movies, TV shows, articles, even artefacts, Tarzan underwear.  Vernons says he interviewed Bill Hillman at ERBzine although it is difficult to find what he gleaned from the conversation, wait a minute, maybe the reference to the 1893 Columbian Expo.  Bill was probably hot on that topic.

     As literary critic Vernon doesn’t so much analyze as create.  He uses Tarzan body parts from various books and films to create his own monster, and his Tarzan is monstrous.

     As I say he uses his sources as though making a stew; mixing them up to creat a sex driven Tarzan that no twelve year would recognize as his hero.

     Vernon doesn’t seem able to distinguish the motives, the agendas of the various sources who are projecting their own inner world on Tarzan such as Bo and John Derek in their vision of  The Big Bwana.  I didn’t say Banana; I said Bwana.  Melding these sources doesn’t create a ‘biographical composite’ of Tarzan that all can agree on; it is merely the projection of Vernon’s own inner psyche.

      Apparently Vernon’s approach is a valid historical literary criticism technique in today’s academic environment.  It’s not what you say but who you say it about.  As I say it goes beyond interpretation or revisionism into creating an alternate universe.

     The approach intrigued me.  In that spirit I offer my own creation of Tarzan and a revisionist/creation of history.  In the view of facts as they might be construed by a fanatic with an agenda I offer Tarzan as an agent of  Globalism serving as the first viceroy of Africa.

     Mr. Vernon keeps talking about a colonial period as if such a thing has ever existed.  His professors must have been from the stone age.  As advanced thinkers know what these prehistoric monsters refer to as colonialism was in reality the early stages of what is now recoginized as Globalism.  This how Globalism began. In the very early stages all cultures were relatively distinct, living in separate well defined areas.  The Chinese were in China, Africans were in Africa, Europeans were in Europe.  Further relatively internal distinct sub-divisions can be made on all continents.  It was clear to the most primitive minds, well, actually European primitive minds, that what was needed to…well for whatever reason they had…to make the world a more secure place was Globalism.  Wars were anathema but one couldn’t create Globalism without some really destructive wars so they forged fearlessly ahead secure in the purity of their intentions.  This posited the problem of bringing together in most cases people who didn’t know other cultures even existed, those ‘lesser races outside the law.’

     As I say Europeans were then and are now the promoters of the cause of Globalism.  It’s good for people and it’s good for  the Global Money Trust.  Initially Europe sent out ships and explorers to the four corners of the Earth.  In that far off, almost once upon a, time unlike today local populations were hostile to what they mistakenly called invaders.  Sometimes their resistance involved military force, in other words war; so in self-defense it was necessary to mow the heathens down.  We had screw guns and maxims and they didn’t.  Rather foolish on their part while causing Globalists a great deal of emotional distress.  Almost had a nervous breakdown.  It could have been avoided.  Globalists only wanted peace if they had understood.

     Gradually the peoples of the world learned that they going to have to peacefully interact if even at gunpoint.  But then there was disagreement in Europe.  the Global barriers were being lowered as this beneficent ideology of Globalism was slowly accepted.  As expected there were reactionary elements.  In both cases the criminal Germans were the hard nuts.  They insisted on the right to be themselves rather than submerging their identity into what the Globalists wanted.  Their resistance was futile; Globalists got what they wanted anyway, the Globe be damned.  After the second German petulance Globalists crushed them.  Some wanted to exterminate the whole lot, raze Germany to the ground and turn it into pasture land.  I don’t have to tell you that gentler and more loving heads prevailed.   Globalists gave the African troops leave to loot Strasbourg and rape the German women and let it go at that.  You see, there are some sacrifices we all have to make.

     It is best not to oppose Globalist wishes.  Globalism will be had on their terms or they’ll get rid of ya.  As another example, the Kulaks of Russia opposed Globalist wishes and it was necessary to exterminate them to the man, woman and child.  I won’t tell you the intense emotional pain that incident cost the Globalists, those were not crocodile tears as often alleged.  People won’t be happy unless the blessings of globalism are universal.  That’s what Globalism means, universal.

     Now, one of the great advocates of Globalism was the progressive American ‘fantasy’ writer, Edgar Rice Burroughs.  Fantasy, humph.  As Edgar’s avatar of Globalism he created the character of Tarzan the Ape Man.  The brilliance of the ape man is almost incomprehensible.  As Mr. Vernon points out Tarzan united the fauna being man and beast at one and the same time.  His being encompassed all evolution, unlike the rest of us who are products of only a few of the commoner genes, as he passed through the stages of Beast, Negro and European.  How fitting that Edgar Rice Burroughs should make him the very first Commissar, even Czar,  of Africa.  Yes, he was White.  But only we Liberal White people have understood our manifest destiny to bring all peoples together in Globalism.   Well, yes, there were mistakes and, quite frankly, genocides, but they were necessary and not arbitrary.  They were decided on only after long and careful deliberation.  It was like pruning a tree to make it more beautiful.  When Chairman Mao finished pruning the recalcitrant Chinese there were 50 million branches on the ground, but, what of it?  As Mao himself benignly and poetically, he was a poet you know,  intoned:  ‘So?  Will the flowers not blossom in spring and cool breezes not blow across waving fields of grain.’  Of course they would and as proof they have and will continue to do so.  How ridiculous!  There’s always new babies to replace those gone.  Come on! 

     Edgar very cleverly has that man we now know as a villain, Stalin, seek to replace Tarzan as Commissar because he was in fact too just and too gentle with his charges.  Rather than compelling Africans to hew to the Party line Edgar portrays Tarzan letting the Africans do as they please so long as they didn’t kill each other.  That was in his  brilliant history he called Tarzan the Invincible, and he wasn’t kidding.  It wasn’t unreasonable to send a replacement from Moscow but Edgar perversely has Tarzan defeat his replacement.  You can read about it in Edgar’s history yourself.

     So, Mr. Vernon has expended a great deal of effort to prove the unprovable.  He completely mistakes the reason for the US presence in Viet Nam.  This was not nation building as he has been induced by his professors to believe.  This was a necessary stage in the creation of Globalism.  Today the two halves of Viet Nam have been reunited because of their efforts and Globalism is progressing nicely there, thank you very much.

     A larger problem was to bring China into the Globalist empire..  But that was cleverly done by inducing them to manufacture big screen TVs for not only the province of the United States but the world.  Today they are the Globe’s largest manufacturer of flat screen TVs and tennis shoes  and are assisting in the Globalism of Africa sending their tens of millions of excess personnel to help the Africans enter the Global economy.

     I certainly appreciate the effort Mr. Vernon has put into his project; it is regretable he has been so ill informed about the difference between Globalism and colonialism.  Colonialism is when you occupy a country for selfish reasons; Globalism is when you subject or exterminate a people for the right reasons.

     The Global Cabal is sorry people had to die.  As the old saw says:  You can’t make an omelet without breaking a few eggs.  Its better to be the hammer than the nail.

     I’m sorry Mr. Vernon but I can’t recommend your book.

Edgar Rice Burroughs, Science And Spiritualism

The last story in Ray Bradbury’s Martian Chronicles is about the expulsion from Earth of the various supernatural or imaginary beings such as fairies, elves, the elementals, all those beings external to ourselves but projections of our minds on Nature, to Mars as a last resort and how they were all dieing as Mars became scientifically accessible leaving no place for them to exist.

On Earth the rejection of such supernatural beings began with the Enlightenment.   When the smoke and fury of the French Revolution and the Napoleonic years settled and cleared it was a new world with a completely different understanding of the nature of the world.  Science, that is, knowing, had displaced belief as a Weltanschauung.

The old does not give way so easily to the new.  Even while knowing that fairies did not exist the short lived reaction of the Romantic Period with its wonderful stories and fictions followed the Napoleonic period.

Supernatural phenomena displaced from the very air we breathed reformed in the minds of Men as the ability of certain people called Mediums to communicate with spirits although the spirits were no longer called supernatural but paranormal.  Thus the fairies morphed into dead ancestors, dead famous men, communicants from beyond the grave.  Men and women merely combined science with fantasy.  Science fiction, you see.

Spiritualism was made feasible by the rediscovery of hypnotism by Anton Mesmer in the years preceding the French Revolution.  The first modern glimmerings of the sub- or unconscius began to take form.  The unconscious was the arena of paranormal activity.

Hypnotism soon lost scientific credibility during the mid-century being abandoned to stage performers who then became the first real investigators of the unconscious as they practiced their art.

While the antecedents of spiritualism go back much further the pehnomena associated with it began to make their appearance in the 1840s.  Because the unconscious was so little understood spiritualism was actually thought of as scientific.  The investigators of the unconscious gave it incredible powers and attributes, what I would call supernatural but which became known as paranormal.  Communicating with spirits, teleportation, telecommunications, all the stuff that later became the staples of science fiction.

Thus in 1882, Jean-Martin Charcot, a doctor working in the Salpetriere in Paris made hypnotism once again a legitimate academic study.

The question here is how much innovation could the nineteenth century take without losing its center or balance.  Yeats’ poem The Second Coming presents the situation well.  Freud, who was present at this particular creation, was to say that three discoveries shattered the confidence of Man; the first was the Galilean discovery that the Earth was not the center of the universe, the second revelation was Darwin’s announcement that Man was not unique in creation and the last was the discovery of the unconscious.  Of these three the last two happened simultaneiously amidst a welter of scientific discoveries and technological applications that completely changed Man’s relationship to the world.  One imagines that these were the reasons for the astonishing literary creativity as Victorians grappled to deal with these new realities.  There was a sea change in literary expression.

Key to understanding these intellectual developments is the need of Man for immortality.  With God in his heaven but disconnected from the world supernatural explanations were no longer plausible.  The longing for immortality remained so FWH Myers a founder of the Society For Psychical Research changed the word supernatural into paranormal.  As the notion of the unconscious was now wedded to science and given, in effect, supernatural powers under the guise of the paranormal it was thought, or hoped, that by tapping these supernormal powers one could make contact with the departed hence spiritism or Spiritualism.

While from our present vantage point after a hundred or more years of acclimatizing ourselves to an understanding of science, the unconscious and a rejection of the supernatural, the combination of science and spiritualism seems ridiculous.  Such was not the case at the time.  Serious scientists embraced the notion that spirtualism was scientific.

Now, a debate in Burroughs’ studies is whether and/or how much Burroughs was influenced by the esoteric.  In my opinion and I believe that of Bibliophile David Adams, a great deal.  David has done wonderful work in esbatlishing the connection between the esotericism of L. Frank Baum and his Oz series of books and Burroughs while Dale Broadhurst has added much.

Beginning in the sixties of the nineteenth century a French writer who was to have a great influence on ERB, Camille Flammarion, began writing his scientific romances and astronomy books.  Not only did Flammarion form ERB’s ideas of the nature of Mars but this French writer was imbued with the notions of spiritualism that informed his science and astronomy.  He and another astronomer, Percival Lowell, who is often associated with ERB, in fact, spent time with Flammarion exchanging Martian ideas.  Flammarion and Lowell are associated.

So, in reading Flammarion ERB would have imbibed a good deal of spiritualistic, occult, or esoteric ideas.  Flammarion actually ended his days as much more a spiritualist than astronomer.  As a spiritualist he was associated with Conan Doyle.

Thus in the search for a new basis of immortality, while the notion of God became intenable, Flammarion and others began to search for immortality in outer space.  There were even notions that spirits went to Mars to live after death somewhat in the manner of Bradbury’s nixies and pixies.  In his book Lumen Flammarion has his hero taking up residence on the star Capella in outer space after death.  Such a book as Lumen must have left Burroughs breathless with wonderment.  Lumen is some pretty far out stuff in more ways than one.  After a hundred fifty years of science fiction these ideas have been endlessly explored becoming trite and even old hat but at the time they were

excitingly new.  Flammarion even put into Burroughs’ mind that time itself had no independent existence.  Mind boggling stuff.

I believe that by now Bibliophiles have assembled a library of books that Burroughs either did read or is likely to have read before 1911 that number at least two or three hundred.  Of course, without radio, TV, or movies for all of Burroughs’ childhood, youth and a major portion of his young manhood, although movies would have become a reality by the time he began writing, there was little entertainment except reading.  Maybe a spot of croquet.

As far as reading goes I suspect that ERB spent a significant portion of his scantily employed late twenties and early thirties sitting in the Chicago Library sifting through the odd volume.  It can’t be a coincidence that Tarzan lounged for many an hour in the Paris library before he became a secret agent and left for North Africa.

I have come across a book by the English author Charles Howard Hinton entitled Scientific Romances of which one explores the notion of a fourth dimension .  Hinton is said to have been an influence on H.G. Wells’ The Time Machine.  It seems certain that Burroughs read The Time Machine while he would have found many discussions of the fourth dimension as well as other scientific fantasies in the magazines and even newspapers as Hillman has so amply demonstrated on ERBzine.  We also know that ERB had a subscription to Popular Mechanics while probably reading Popular Science on a regular basis.  Popular Science was established in 1872.

It is clear that ERB was keenly interested in psychology and from references distributed  throughout the corpus, reasonably well informed.

I wouldn’t go so far as to maintain that ERB read the French psychologist Theodore Flournoy’s From India To The Planet Mars but George T. McWhorter does list it as a volume in Vern Corriel’s library of likely books read by Burroughs.  The book was published in 1899 just as Burroughs was entering his very troubled period from 1900 to 1904-05 that included his bashing in Toronto with subsequent mental problems, a bout with typhoid fever and his and Emma’s flight to Idaho and Salt Lake City.  So that narrows the window down a bit.

However the book seems to describe the manner in which his mind worked so that it provides a possible or probable insight into the way his mind did work.

ERB’s writing career was born in desperation.  While he may say that he considered writing unmanly it is also true that he tried to write a lighthearted account of becoming a new father a couple years before he took up his pen in seriousness.  Obviously he saw writing as a way out.  His life had bittely disappointed his exalted expectations hence he would have fallen into a horrible depression probably with disastrous results if the success of his stories hadn’t redeemed his opinion of himself.

Helene Smith the Medium of Fluornoy’s investigation into mediumship was in the same situation.  Her future while secure enough in the material sense, as was Burroughs, fell far short of her hopes and expectations.  Thus she turned to mediumship to realize herself much as Burroughs turned to literature.  She enjoyed some success and notoriety attracting the attention of, among others, the psychologist Theodore Flournoy.  Fournoy who enjoyed some prominence at the time, was one of those confusing spiritualism with science because of his misunderstanding of the unconscious.  Thus as Miss Smith unfolded her conversations with the inhabitants of Mars it was taken with some plausibility.

If any readers I may have have also read my review of Du Maurier’s Peter Ibbetson he or she will remember that Peter and Mary were restricted in their dream activities to only what they had done, seen and remembered or learned.  As I have frequently said, you can only get out of a mind what has gone into it.  In this sense Miss Smith was severely handicapped  by an inadequate education and limited experience.  While she was reasonably creative in the construction of her three worlds- those of ancient India, Mars and the court of Marie Antoinette- she was unable to be utterly convincing.  In the end her resourcefulness gave out and the scientific types drifted away.  She more or less descended into a deep depression as her expectations failed.  Had she been more imagination she might have turned to writing as Burroughs did.

If Burroughs did read Flournoy, of which I am not convinced, he may have noted that Miss Smith’s method was quite similar to  his habit of trancelike daydreaming that fulfilled his own expectations of life in fantasy.

In Burroughs’ case he had the inestimable advantage of having stuffed his mind with a large array of imaginative literature, a fairly good amateur’s notions of science and technology, along with a very decent range of valuable experience.  His younger days were actually quite exciting.  He was also gifted with an amazing imagination and the ability to use it constructively.

Consider this possibility.  I append a poem that he would have undoubtedly read- When You Were A Tadpole And I Was A Fish.  Read this and then compare it to The Land That Time Forgot.

Evolution

With something like that stuffed into his subconscious what wonders might ensue.  Obviously The Land That Time Forgot and The Eternal Lover.

As Miss Smith had turned to spiritualism and mediumship, Burroughs turned his talents to writing.  According to himself he used essentially mediumistic techniques in hiswriting.  He said that he entered a tracelike state, what one might almost call automatic writing to compose his stories.  He certainly turned out three hundred well written pages in a remarkably short time with very few delays and interruptions.  He was then able to immediately begin another story.  This facility lasted from 1911 to 1914 when his reservoir  of stored material ws exhausted.  His pace then slowed down as he had to originate stories and presumably work them out more rather than just spew them out.

Curiously like Miss Smith he created three main worlds with some deadends and solo works.  Thus while Miss Smith created Indian, Martian and her ‘Royal’ identity Burroughs created an inner World, Tarzan and African world, and a Martian world.

Perhaps in both cases three worlds were necessary to give expression to the full range of their hopes and expectations.  In Burroughs’ case his worlds correspond to the equivalences of the subconscious in Pellucidar, the conscious in Tarzan and Africa and shall we say, the aspirational or spiritual of Mars.  In point of fact Burroughs writing style varies in each of the three worlds, just as they did in Miss Smith’s.

Having exhausted his early intellectual resources Burroughs read extensively and exhaustively to recharge  his intellectual batteries.  This would have been completely normal because it is quite easy to write oneself out.  Indeed, he was warned about this by his editor, Metcalf.  Having, as it were, gotten what was in your mind on paper what you had was used up and has to be augmented.  One needs fresh experience and more knowledge.  ERB was capable of achieving this from 1911 to about 1936 when his resources were essentially exhausted.  Regardless of what one considers the quality of the later work it is a recap, a summation of his work rather than extension or innovatory into new territory.  Once again, not at all unusual.

As a child of his times his work is a unique blend of science and spiritualism with the accent on science.  One can only conjecture how he assimiliated Camille Flammarion’s own unique blend of spiritualism and science but it would seem clear that Flammarion inflamed his imagination setting him on his career as perhaps the world’s first true science-fiction writer as opposed to merely imaginative or fantasy fiction although he was no mean hand at all.

What We Have Here Is Change

     In the recent American presidential campaign in the US the winner won by promising the inevitable, Change.  A very safe promise as the history of the world is one of change.  Indeed, the life of the individual is one of unending change from the cradle to the grave.  Change is now and forever.  The question is, what response is made to the changes.

     The times of Edgar Rice Burroughs were a period of the most earth shaking and rapid of all.  At the same time most perilous, as the evolution of actual scientific knowledge in all fields was in its infancy and subject to misinterpretation.  One might say in Burroughsian imagery that a series of doors stood before mankind, entering the right door would be more beneficial than the wrong doors.

     Burroughs and others made tantative moves for the right door but others entered by the wrong door drawing most others through with them.  What looked like progress turned into a regression.  To shut up criticism the regressives began to demonize all those of different opinions.  Burroughs was among those.

      Some say he adapted poorly to the flood of change but the peole who do so are so confident in their opinions that to disagree with them is to be accused of being not only wrong but either criminal or insane.  One doesn’t take their opinions too seriously as change will certainly demonstrate their opinions as ludicrous if it hasn’t already.  Nevertheless as they are quite vocal in their condemnation of Edgar Rice Burroughs we have to consider the accuracy of their accusations as well as that of their own viewpoint.  How well do they understand the issues?

     ERB has some interesting observations on the changes occurring in the history, society and racial matters of his times as well as the concealed role of hypnotism in the transformation of that society.  The basis of hypnotism is suggestion.  As ERB say in Thuvia all is based on suggestion and counter-suggestion.  If one conciders life and learning from that angle it presents some interesting possibilites.

     What is learning?  What is suggestion?

     When the child is conceived he must of necessity have a mind with a blank slate.  Freud, Jung and many others seem to seriously believe that newborns can inherit ancestral memories even though there is no one beyond the womb who has ever recalled any.

     In fact without experience or learning that has has been introjected into the mind there is nothing for the mind to consider, hence no cogitation at all.  This mind can only begin to form with the ejection from the womb.  This occurs with a brain still in the process of formation.  The development of the brain can only be considered completed shortly after puberty.

     It seems obvious then that you can’t get out of a mind what isn’t in it.  It behooves society then to begin loading the mind of a child as soon as the child  is capable of handling education.  The education of the mind must be built step by step to provide a firm foundation for the intellectual superstructure.  Whatever is in the mind must come from or be suggested from outside the mind.  There is no internal system of knowledge.  Thus all knowledge is suggested to the child’s mind by his caretakers.  They may be good or bad, well or ill intentioned.  The brain is organized to receive suggestions or, in another word, experience.  The reactive structure may already be in place dut to experiences in the womb and the actual birthing process but the actual learning process begins the moment the newborn emerges from the womb and receives a slap on the bottom to get his lungs started.

     Thus the mind of the child is extremely malleable during the time until about puberty and shortly thereafter.  If education is neglected during this early period and shortly thereafter it is unlikely that the adult can ever make up the lack.  For instance if the basics or reading, writing and arithmetic are not loaded into the brain during this malleable period it is very rare that the skills can be acquired at a later time.

     Thus, as it was always known that the child is father to the man various doctrinaire organizations such as the Jesuits believed that if they could form the education of the child or, in another word, indoctrinte him, they could shape the future in their own image.  In Burroughs’ time the mechanisms of education were more fully understood.  Various schemes were proposed to revise educational methods many of which were just odd or crude, but the better thought to change the direction of society toward a higher ideal.

     The Communists were well are at the time that suggestion was the basis of education.  Lothrop Stoddard writing in his The Revolt Against Civilization of 1922 quotes Eden and Cedar Paul from their book Proletcult of 1921:

     “There is no such thing as “scientific” economics or sociology.  For these reasons…there should be organized and spread abroad a new kind of education, “Proletcult.”  Thus…in a fighting culture aimed at the overthrow of capitalism and at the replacement of democratic culture and bourgeois ideology by ergatocratic culture and proletarian  ideology…”  The authors warmly endorse the Soviet government’s prostitution of education and all other forms of intellectual activity to Communist propaganda, for we are told that the “new education” is inspired by the “new psychology”, which “provides the philosophical justification of Bolshevism and supplies a theoretical guide for our efforts in the field of proletarian culture…. Education is suggestion.  The recognition that suggestion is auto suggestion, and that auto suggestion is the means whereby imagination controls the subconscious self, will enable us to make a right use of the most potent force which has become available to the members of the human herd since the invention of articulate speech.

     I’m sure you can find appropriate application of the doctrine since Stoddard wrote in education, movies, TV, books and phonograph records and CDs.  While I would disagree with the Pauls’ notion of suggestion and auto suggestion the Freudian influence is quite clear.  This would be abetted by John Dewey’s notions on education that deemphasized the educational foundation while directing it more toward ideological considerations, or ‘relatively unstructured, free, student-directed progressive education.’

     God only knows what free, progressive education is but this sort of social engineering was the wrong turn being taken in this era of rapid change.

     So, loading the brain to deal with life’s exigencies is of necessity a slow process. As the brain continues to develop outside the womb there is plenty of room for malfunction.  As man is incapable of creating anything original the education of the child may be compared to the loading of a computer.  First the operating system.  Whether consciously or unconsciously since all man knows is his own brain he has replicated it in his machine.  A computer functions just like a brain, which should astound no one, as man can only devise what he already knows.

     Now, human experience dates back about a hundred thousand years.  I intentionally leave out the African development as it had nothing to do with the education of mankind.   The African contribution is nil.  Education began outside Africa.  Having painfully and laboriously accumulated the huge fund of knowledge it must be entered into the brain of the new being.  This sort of suggestion is called education.  There’s not much room for anything called ‘free’ or ‘progressive.’  Getting it ain’t going to be free, the child has to work like a mule.  This is a slow, laborious process as extensive foundations must be laid down before any superstructure can rise.  Thus years are consumed just to teach the child reading, writing and arithmetic.  With these three tools he can learn anything else.  Inexplicably this fact seems to have been lost sight of in today’s educational theories unless of course the Pauls’ dictum is being followed.

     Once the foundation has been laid, a form of suggestion and actually hypnosis, the child, now a student, must be taught how to manage and interpret what he learns at an increasingly rapid pace.  Unfortunately there will be children left behind; any other expectation is fatuous, some are just brighter than others.  Managing and interpreting comes from within the experience of the organism.  Here’s the real problem because the same data will by analyzed differently and produce different results and opinions.

     Along with learning factual matters the child must at the same time develop emotionally and psychologically.  Nasty work.  This is a difficult part.  As the child has little ability to understand and even less ability to accurately analyze it he has to reason from faulty premisses.  This ignorance of reality is what forms Freud’s notion of the unconscious or Id.  Correcting this unconscious to consciousness is the conversion of Freud’s Id to Ego.  A child misinterprets suggestions.  Some become fixated in his un- or subconscious.  The fixations are what distort consciousness from the subconscious interfering with the integration of the subconscious and the conscious.  While the child is made more conscious in his ability to understand and reject harmful suggestions these fixations like post-hypnotic suggestions control his responses.  The fixations must be exorcised which is the intended function of the psychoanalysis of Freud and Jung.

     Once again, suggestion is everything outside your mind.  Your mind cannot function without these suggestions because there will be nothing in the mind to function.  Be carefull of what you put into your mind or, at least, that you do put something of value into it.  Whether ERB realized this or not, his ideas of hypnosis and suggestion indicate he might have, he pursued a program of continuing education all his adult life.  At the time of writing Thuvia he was working through Edward Gibbons’ Decline And Fall Of The Roman Empire, a vast minefield of amazing and truly educational suggestion.

Nobody Gets Out Of Bantoom Alive!

     Tara descends in the land of Bantoom ruled by the Kaldanes.  I think the Kaldanes can be traced to Baum’s Emerald City Of Oz.  In that title Baum writes of a queen who when she wished to change her hair style selected one from a number of heads, removed the head she’s wearing and places a new head on her shoulders.

     Unlike the queen the heads of the Kaldanes and the bodies of the Rykors are separate entities.

     The Kaldanes exist independently of the Rykors but mount their shoulders to use them essentially as slaves.  When their purpose is satisfied they abandon the Rykors or bodies that then, without directing intelligence, just lie or flop around like the proverbial chicken.

     The picture ERB presents of them through the first vision of them by Tara is fairly repulsive.  It would by itself explain why the Post and the other slicks rejected the story.

     Either I’m reading things into the story or ERB is making some very subtle examinations of certain problems troubling society.  The three issues I have noted concern labor, sex and evolution. 

     To take the first.

     In the world there are many forms of disagreeable labor that people would rather not do.  Much of the industrial labor is hot, dirty and heavy with a lot of unpleasant bending and stooping.  Still the job has to get done.

     In England once the so-called Industrial Revolution ethos first took place a very large percentage of the work force was essentially bestialized to work the mines and factories, especially the women and children.  This is an unightly and unpleasant situation.

     In the US and colonial areas African slaves were imported to do the stoop labor.  It should be noted as Michael Hoffman points out in his studies that White slavery preceded that of Black slavery.  Even at the time of the American Revolution Hoffman found many White slaves still existing the US.  A White man was sold to a Negro in Chicago in the 1840s for tweny-five cents..  Africans only gradually replaced the Whites.  Thus just preceding Eli Whitney’s invention of the cotton gin after which African slavery exploded there were White slaves in the US.

     Slavery is inseparable from Burroughs’ works.  He can’t imagine a society without slaves.  Chessmen opens explaining the relationship between Tara and her personal slave girl.

     Slavery was abandoned in the US at about the same time serfdom was abolished in Europe.  The Russian serfs which you can read as slaves were liberated only as the US’ own civil war was being fought.  While industrial slavery is too distant in the past for us to imagine it slavery was a very recent phenomenon to Burroughs.  He read.  He must have been aware of Russia in which the vast majority of the population were slaves as serfs, hence Russia was up to 1861 a vast slaveocracy no different than the US South.

     The question then was how to get the hard work done without slaves.  The industrial system of the time merely left the population nominally free while paying very low wages making the bulk of the population actual wage slaves.

      The hard labor was definitely nothing anyone who could avoid it wanted to do so the industrialists imported vast numbers of laborers at a liguistic disadvantage who then had no choice but to become wage slaves.  Burroughs, very sensitive to social issues then, may have thought he was only reflecting the existing situation in his stories.  After all this is the period of the horrors of the sweat shops.

     This problem preoccupied society so that in 1931 a mere ten years after Chessmen Aldous Huxley wrote Brave New World that presents a different solution than ERB’s.  Huxley presents a world of test tube babies in which  certain poisons are placed in tubes to create chemically altered humans.  The least intelligent of these were the Gammas who were given the least desirable jobs on that basis that they wouldn’t have the brains to complain.

     Burroughs solution is somewhat different.  The Rykors are essentially slaves; as Greek mythology put it the Rykors were mere bellies with arms and legs, lacking any intelligence whatever they were unable to complain and being deaf, dumb and blind couldn’t revolt.

     The slave driver was the Kaldane on their shoulder who directed the Rykor in the unpleasant tasks without consequences to himself.  When the Kaldanes came back from the fields at night they abandoned their Rykors and went about their business of thinking, fresh and without fatigue.

     Thus ERB has very cleverly solved the problem of stoop labor- the labor the Kaldanes wouldn’t do.

     2.

     ERB also gives himself room to toy with the idea of sex.  He models Bantoom after a beehive which was a common device at the time.  He changes the sexual primacy by making Luud a kingbee rather than a queen bee.  All the Kaldanes have been hatched from eggs laid by King Bee Luud so Luud is truly the ‘father of his country.’  The jokes are there.  Whether ERB was a sly old dog or whether he just wrote this stuff with no humor prepense is up to the reader to decide.  Either he was intending humor or else he was naturally one of the funniest men alive.

     It seems that all Kaldanes were male while the Rykors were either male or female.  Thus any Kaldane could choose to be a man or woman for the day.  This may possibly refer back to Greek mythology where Teiresias was the only person who had been both a man and a woman.  He was then called on to say who got more sexual pleasure men or women.  He thought women definitely.  Any Kaldane could have answered as well.

     ERB plays with the idea briefly but doesn’t take it too far.  As far as the slicks were probably concerned he had so many strikes against him they didn’t even want to look at him.  Given their attitude  it even seems remarkable that the pulps paid good money for the story.  This is really pretty strange stuff and it keeps getting stranger.  ERB just skirts the accusation of a deranged mind in this story.  Times have changed, of course.

     Then there is the matter of the evolution of intelligence.  This is a perennial topic in science fiction.  At the presentt time the ultimate intellect is usually portrayed a as giant head on a spindly unathletic body incapable of much but feeding itself.

     At the time it was thought that the mind and body were two separate things.  In the fifties when I grew up wrestling with the idea Burroughs’ key Martian novels were available from G&D but I never read them.  I was scandalized that Burroughs would write anything but Tarzan novels.  It didn’t seem right to me that he would write anything else.

     So, Burroughs tackles the mind/body relationship by completely separating brain and body.  These brains were anaerobic, they could exist without oxygen.  This was by design because when the oxygen plant will have failed and Mars changed from a dying planet to a dead one the Kaldanes were going to retire deep into the mars and live out their existence thinking.  Bye bye Rykors.

     ERB explains this quite succinctly.  Evolution on Mars:

     You do not understand…It is too big for you to grasp, but I will try to explain it.  Barssom, the moons, the sun, the stars were created for a single purpose.  From the beginning of time Nature has labored arduously toward the consummation of this purpose.  At the very beginning things existed with life, but no brain.  Gradually rudimentary nervous systems and miniscule brains evolved.  Evolution proceeded.  The brains became larger and more powerful.  In us you see the highest development; but there are those of us who believe that there is yet another step- that some time in the far future our race shall develop into the super thing- just brain.  The incubus of legs and chelae and vital organs will be removed.  The future Kaldane will be nothing but a great brain.  Deaf, dumb and blind it will be sealed in a great, wonderful, beautiful brain with nothing to distract it from eternal thought.

          Right.  I saw the movie.  It was called Hitler’s Brain and it was a great one.  Burroughs always seems to have figured out the entire B movie and sci-fi catalog.    If I didn’t know better, and I don’t, I’d think his writings have been cribbed for the movies from his day to this.  Burroughs is surely one of the most influential intellects from his time to the present.  He is a baffling phenomenon, no one wants to give him credit but theyuse his ideas constantly.

     The passage quoted is a fair synopsis of the course of evolution while dealing with a debating topic of his day and ours.

     It’s quite clear ERB put everything he had into this effort.

     Having landed in a Bantoom that might be compared to Baum’s Land of the Munchkins, although a rather disquieting comparison.  Baum is actually a very strange writer.  the Shaggy Man Of Oz left me very uneasy.  I remember as a child a woman lamenting the book because she thought it would make it easy for weird old men to lure little girls away.  The book was weird as was The Emeral City Of Oz.  Burroughs takes weirdness a stride or two beyond those books.  There’s always this uneasy quasi-pornographic feel behind his stories.

     Tara is baffled by the overseer Kaldanes and slave Rykors working in the field.  She waits until nightfall to go in search of food coming very close to the hive.  Burroughs will develop this image shortly in Tarzan And The Ant Men.  Night falls and the Banths come out.  Tara can’t understand why these Martian lions are so plentiful in the valley.  Shortly she will learn the reason is that the Kaldanes throw the dead and worn out Rykors into the fields for the Banths.  It’s just gruesome little details like this that probably got ERB his reputation for being too far on the edge.  Doesn’t bother us though, does it?

     Now, a Banth steals up on Tara but God is on her side, she’s got a head start for the ubiquitous tree.  Here we have two ambivalent images in Burroughs.  Tree and lions are symbols of both safety or danger.

     On the one hand Burroughs finds comfort and safety in trees, most conspicuously in the Tarzan stories.  There all Africa with the exception of some lands deep in the Sahara is covered by one giant forest with conviently low branches unlike the picture we see of Baobobs and whatever.  Tarzan is at home in the trees moving faster and with more ease than you and I trudging along on the ground.

     If there’s danger in the lower terrace Tarzan moves up to the middle terrace or even the upper terraces where the little monkeys play.  If he has a quarrel with Jane he has favorite trees in which to spend the night.  He is sometimes treed as he was in Tarzan At The Earth’s Core.  Here Tara is treed in a close replica to the treeing of Schneider in Tarzan The Untamed.

     In that story Tarzan took Schneider to an enclosed natural bowl with a creek trickling into a cave.  In the center was lone tree and a hungry lion.  Tarzan viciously placed Schneider in the tree.  It was up to Schneider to evade the cat when thirsty finding his way back up the tree in a game of cat and mouse.

     Burroughs replicates the scene here.  Tara drinks from the stream then being chased up the tree by the Banth who keeps watch till morning before stalking away.

      So here the tree is both safety and a trap.  Perhaps as ERB’s financial troubles developed he felt like Schneider so he replicated the situation with Tara as himself.

     Martian rosy fingered Dawn appears.  In trying to get back to her flier Tara is captured by the Kaldanes.  The episode of her capture is well done as she discovers the secret of the Kaldanes and Rykors.  Her captor is a Kaldane named Ghek who is to become a principal actor in the story.

     Tara’s descent into the hive gives Burroughs time to philosophize and ruminate before Tara is taken up to her near brush with a fate worse than death at the hands of the Rykor of Luud.

     At the beginning of Chapter VI ERB ruminates on the rough treatment given him by the literary mavens:

     What the creature had told her gave Tara of Helium food for thought.  She had been taught that every created thing fulfilled some useful purpose and she tried conscientiously to discover just what was the rightful place of the kaldanes in the universal scheme of things.  She knew it must have its place but what that place was it was beyond her to conceive.  She had to give it up.  They recalled to her mind a little group of people in Helium who had foresworn the pleasures of life in the pursuit of knowledge.  They were rather patronizing in their relations with those whom they thought not so intellectual.  They considered themselves quite superior.  She smiled at the recollections of a remark her father had once made concerning them, to the effect that if one of them ever dropped his egotism and broke it it would take a week to fumigate Helium.

     It appears that ERB is smarting from the rejection of the literary types even though he longed for their approval.  ERB himself chose not to parade his knowledge as literary types are wont to do, not that I would ever do that myself, while ERB can claim to be well read while profound enough in his writing and observations.

     Eugenics, for instance, was under attack from its origins although widely accepted at this time.  There is something offensive about it to the human spirit while the notion would certainly be socially abused if given free rein.  ERB cleverly skirts the issue here while affirming the benefical results that could be achieved.  Following the above quote he notes the superb physical condition of the Rykors and says that they had been bred to perfection.  In other words they are the product of eugenics the same as thoroughbred horses or pedigreed cats and dogs.   Being bodies without minds, in other words not complete humans, anyone who caught it probably took no offense.  The closer you get the better ERB looks.

     In the descent into the hive Tara idly hums an air which completely charms Ghek who asks what the noise is that Tara is making.  She then sings for him which overwhelms Ghek’s senses thereby definitely preserving her life.  Impervious to female beauty Ghek is transported by music.  Universal language you know.

     This will figure into the story soon.  Tara is expected to fatten up to make a good meal for the Kaldanes who fatten up certain Rykors to make a good lunch.  Thus ERB interjects the ever present theme of cannibalism.  Away from the air and sunshine Tara is pining away so she pleads to be allowed to go outside.  Luud grants this.  Tara tries to escape, is caught and taken to Luud to meet her fate which encounter follows shortly.

     Gahan in his pursuit of Tara had fallen from his flier into the arms of the storm.  This is interesting.  Always heroic he was trying to rescue a companion who was caught in mooring lines flapping beneath the flier.  In the effort the wind catches a line with a heavy buckle at the end giving Gahan/Burroughs the obligatory bash between the eyes.  He loses his hold but rather than plunging directly to mars the wind catches him like a leaf carrying him along with it.  Then after a series of ups and downs gently deposits him on the crimson sward.

     Impossible you say?  No, it is not.  ERB refers to a story he had read somewhere at sometime in which a baby caught up by tornado had been carried miles from its home and deposited gently on the ground unhurt where it was found.  These things all sound preposterous; they have happened.

    In a clever handling of time differentials while Tara was going through her travails that lasted weeks Gahan at almost the same time Tara landed in Bantoom picked himself up from the sward  hundreds of miles away and began walking in the direction he hoped was toward Gathol.  Thus weeks later he arrives in Bantoom at the precise moment to observe Tara’s escape attempt.  Not bad.

     Not only that but having decided to rescue the Red Woman he didn’t then recognize he discovers the flier, kills a Banth or two and drifts, no propeller, directly over the wall of Luud encountering Ghek who fretting for his life agrees to take him to Tara on condition that he can leave with them.  No problem.

     As they are making this deal Tara is struggling to preserve her…oh…integrity.  Luud has set his headless but magnificently built Rykor on her while always a voyeur, he watches.

     Luud has a  powerful mind.  He has not hypnotized Tara but is able to control his brainless Rykor while not being attached.  This means that by remote control he is able to connect to the spinal nerve ending of the Rykor.  Good stunt.

     Gahan and Ghek enter just as the Rykor is poised for the downward thrust.  ERB comes close here.

     Gahan is warned to avoid eye contact but fails to do so becoming hypnotized.  Hypnosis is a significant theme in Burroughs’ work.  In this case he seems to be influenced by George Du Maurier’s novel Trilby with its great character Svengali.  In that story the heroine has no musical talent but Svengali is able to hypnotize her into becoming a second Jenny Lind.  The key point is that while Trilby is singing Svengali must make eye contact from his theatre box.  When contact was broken Trilby immediately began croaking not knowing a note from a hat box.

     ERB does a reverse variation here.  It become apparent that Gahan is entranced by Luud and all is lost.  But in holding Gahan Luud had to relax his hold on his Rykor who went limp (no pun intended) releasing Tara.  The quick minded Tara knowing the hold her singing had on Ghek immediately bursts into full throated song trilling out that wonderful old Martian standard- The Song Of Love.

     Thus ERB reverses the Trilby/Svengali scenario.  Tara’s singing dissolves Luud’s hold on Gahan and it’s all over for Luud.

     An exciting chase scene and battle and the three comaradoes are drifting off to meet another fate in another freak city.  This one is called Manator.

     The Bantoom story thus becomes a preliminary tale to the main story.

     How does the ‘Napoleon in rags’, Bob Dylan, conceive himself in his role as a reformer of Judaism because that is what Messianic Judaism is.  What does this believer in the Bible as the literal word of God see as his mission?  One should note that as Dylan places the Bible above the Talmud he is a Rabbinical Judaic outlaw as Michaelson says.  Did Dylan really just wake up one morning and say: ‘Oh L-ordy, I have crashed.  I need the crutch of Jesus’ as Michaelson, Cornyn and Hartley suggest or was there an ulterior motive?  Perhaps a conceptual idea if not a well thought out program.

     Jay Michaelson, claiming to be a ‘secular’ Jew takes exception to ‘Messianic’ Judaism.  What exactly is Messianic Judaism?  The notion may take many readers by surprise; those who are only familiar with mainstream Judaism and Christianity.  Most non-Jews don’t realize that Judaism has as many sects as Christianity.

     For instance Dylan’s stance smacks of Karaitism.  the Karaites are a Jewish sect that denies the authority of the oral law or Talmud and hence the Rabbis.  They are outlawed as a cult.  Messianic Jews accepting Jesus as the Jewish Messiah and hence the New Dispensation are and always have been by definition Outlaws, being outside THE LAW.

     The Rabbi David M. Hargis of The Messianic Bureau International is quoted by Michael Hoffman in his Judaism Discovered p. 844:

     “Messianic Judaism” is a means for subverting Christianity by incorporated reverence for the rabbis who are heirs to the religion and customs of the ancient Pharisees as recorded in the Talmud.  The claim of Messianic Judaism is that historic Christianity is “pagan” and imbued with “gentile culture” needlessly alienating and offending Judaics who might otherwise convert to Jesus Christ.  Their “solution” is to fashion a supposedly pagan-free form of Judaism that allegedly believes in Jesus.  ‘We believe it would be the best and is ultiamtely necessary for all Jewish people to know their Messiah Yeshua, but we do not believe that God has called any Jewish person to become Gentile or Western Christian in custom.  Rather, we believe it would be best and is ultimately necessary for Christianity to remove its pagan influences and return to the roots of Judaism, that is, to return to the way of Yeshua as He walked by example and set forth in His entire Word….However this does not mean that Modern Rabbinical Judaism does not have truth within it.”- Rabbi David M.      So it would appear that Messianic Jews want a return to pre-Pauline Jesusism deleting all non-Jewish influences in Christianity.  These would include Platonic influences, the Dionysian Kyrios Christos,  the Persian influences, Gnostic influences and the Egyptian influence that made Mary the Mother of God as patterned after Isis.  In other words the Messianic Jewish Jesus would be one that Christians would scarcely recognize.

     As can be seen by the title of Rabbi Hargis’ organization that it is an international one; indeed, Dylan’s outfit Jews For Jesus is international in scope.  You can call that a conspiracy if you like as Cronyn and Hartley do.    

      It would be fair to assume that Mitch Glaser’s and Al Kasha’s organization, Jews For Jesus, also an international organization, is affiliated to, or at least is associated with the Messianic Bueau International in some way or other as like minded organizations.  We know for certain that Dylan was and is associated with Jews For Jesus.  A purpose of Messianic Judaism is to strip Western, that is to say “pagan” influences from the figure of Jesus returning him to the status of ‘pure’ Semite.

     That is to say that the Greek cult of Kyrios Christos is to be abstracted so that Jesus is no longer The Christ.  So the purpose of Messianic Judaism is to take back Jesus from the Christians while reuniting Messianic and Rabbinical Judaism.  The messianics are willing to concede that there is some ‘truth’ in Rabbinical Judaism.

     Dylan was not merely preaching Messianic Judaism to Jews but whiffing it past Christians also.  It is true that he thinned out his audience rather quickly having apparently misjudged the religiosity of his following.  As a Jew of Orthodox sensibiities Dylan, in his mission as Messiah, or King of the Jews as Michaelson styles him, would have to learn something of Christian beliefs and sensibilities.  It would seem likely then that he approached Dwyer of the Vineyard Fellowship to pick his brains.  The question then was Dylan exploited by the Christians as Michaelson believes or was Dylan exploiting the Christians?

     A question then arises as to whether Dylan wasn’t ‘speaking falsely now’  when he said ‘he never wanted to be the voice of his generation, and he certainly never asked to be ‘King of the Jews’ or a vessel for our hopes and dreams.’  Can we believe the denial of this self-styled ‘Napoleon in rags?’  If Napoleon wasn’t a ‘leader’ who demanded following who has ever been?  How mistaken could his contemporaries have been in taking this ‘Napoleon in rags’  as their spokesman.  Can Dylan have changed direction in 1979 when he wanted to become a great Messianic spokesman leading his people to some Promised Land?  What else could have been his intent in becoming a Jim Jones style religious preacher?  ‘There’s something happening here and you don’t know what is, do you Mr. Jones?’

     Dylan definitely confuses Michaelson who opines ‘his latest incarnation, as a mustachioed journeyman musician, is made of equal parts of authenticity and con’ and ‘Dylan, who always seems to be in on the con when he’s not perpetrating one himself.’  Indeed.  Dylan does project a duplicitous character; speaks out of both sides of his mouth at once.  Or once again as Michaelson understands it:  ‘…like him, I think I can understand the appeal of authentic religious experience in the context of superficiality and doublespeak.’  Uh huh!

     Thus Dylan’s double edged mission was and is to strip ‘Christians’ of their ‘pagan’ sensibilities- i.e. Western culture- while converting Rabbinical Jews to Messianism or Jesus.  So, whether Cornyn and Hartley believe it or not, yes, there is a ‘Great Bob Dylan Conspiracy.’

     It is embarrassing that at this late date in the evolution of human consciousness that Bob Dylan believes the Bible to be the literal word of God.  Consciousness has evolved to that level that the sham of the Religious Consciousness should be apparent to all.  Both Science and Communism have been proclaiming the falsity of the religion and extreme Jewish nationalism that Dylan affects for a hundred years or more.

     I certainly have to reject the Religious Consciousness.  As such I feel defrauded by Dylan’s early career and my attachment to it.  Dylan willfully misrepresented himself, doublespeak, and cheated me as well as all his fans who thought he was enlightened.  I was misled.

     Sorry Bob, but you’re a fraud.

 

 

Edgar Rice Burroughs Wrestles With Time

     There are two major themes in Burroughs that present significant difficulties.  One is his preoccupation with slavery.  Slavery pervades the corpus.  I haven’t begun to guess at Burroughs’ notions on slavery.  The second is the wrestle Burroughs has with the concept of Time.  Time is a major preoccupation  of scientific thinkers.

     My ideas on Burroughs ideas on Time were jelled by the following quote from ‘Understanding Media’ by Marshall McLuhan that I came across while rereading the book recently:

     As a piece of technology, the clock is a machine that produces uniform seconds, minutes, and hours on an assembly-line pattern.  Processed in this uniform way, time is separated from the rhythms of human experience.  The mechanical clock, in short, helps to create the image of a numerically quantified and mechanical universe.  It was in the world of the medieval monasteries, with their need for a rule and for synchronized order to guide communal life, that the clock started on its modern developments.  Time measured not by the uniqueness of private experience but by abstract uniform units gradually pervades all sense life, much as does the technology of writing and printing.  Not only work, but also eating and sleeping, came to accommodate themselves to the clock rather than to organic needs.  As the pattern of arbitrary and uniform measurement of time extended itself across society, even clothing began to undergo annual alteration in a way convenient for industry.  At that point, of course, mechanical measurement of time as a principle of applied knowledge joined forces with printing and asembly line as means of uniform fragmentation of processes.

          While Burroughs never states his position succinctly McLuhan might have abstracted the above quote from Burroughs’ novels.

     The Pellucidar series is centered on the problem of Time while Burroughs persistently dwells on the problem throughout the corpus.  Mars itself is a contrast between the orbits of Earth and Mars with its two different durations of time.  The lost cities of Africa are a contrast in time periods as they all exist within the present while products of a distant past,  most notably the lost city of Opar that dates back to Atlantis nearly unchanged.

     Tied to the concept of Time are Burroughs’ notions on evolution.  The most notable novel in that line being The Land That Time Forgot.  Time forgot.  Time didn’t so much forget it as encapsulate a series of time periods that exist side by side.

     Usually Burroughs’ ruminations are thoroughly disguised as ‘entertainment.’  If you are merely entertaining yourself by reading Burroughs you probably won’t consciously recognize the underlying examinations but you probably will be affected subconsciously.  A hypnotic suggestion so to speak.  After all, the stories themselves are fairly slight and yet the attention of readers from teenagers to college professors over a century now are riveted by the author.

     I don’t intend to be exhaustive in this essay but I would like to concentrate on two novelistic examinations by Burroughs.  The largest examination and most obvious is that of ‘Tarzan At The Earth’s Core’ and its successor ‘Tarzan The Invincible.’  The other hidden example is ‘Bridge And The Oskaloosa Kid’ also known by its published title: ‘The Oakdale Affair.’  I will begin with the latter.

     I’ve written on ‘Bridge And The Oskaloosa Kid’ a couple times, one major essay being on the ezine, ERBzine, Only The Strong Survive.  http://erbzine.com/mag14/1483.html .  There is a great deal going on in this wonderful story that isn’t so obvious.  I didn’t have that good a handle on the story although Lord knows I tried hard enough.

     I was mystified by the course taken by Bridge, the Kid, the Bear, the Gypsy Girl and Hetty Penning from the Squibb Farm to the destination warehouse.  There is probably a great deal of symbolism I’m still not getting but as it appears to me now Burroughs is contrasting two different kinds of time.

     The journey takes a day and a night to complete by which I do not mean to say twenty-four hours of mechanical time but a physical day and night of experiential time.  In other words according to McLuhan Time measured by the uniqueness of personal experience on one hand and time measured by abstract uniform units on the other.

     Both the origin of the journey and its end are based on experiential time where the sun not the clock governs the actions.  As darkness falls the journey through time is bisected by the passage through a town.  Here experiential time is contrasted to mechanical time.  That mechanical time is precisely measured according to the precepts of the efficiency expert Frederick Taylor. Indeed, within a year or so Burroughs would pen a book on the same theme entitled ‘The Efficiency Expert.’

     In this book, Willie Case, a little farm boy who Gail Prim posing as a hobo had bummed from him came to town.  The story involves several criminal acts and a major detective so Willie is hot to solve the case.  Willie comes to town which is run by the clock.  Willie has a dollar to spend.  ERB accounts for each and every penny as it is spent.  In a very humorous scene Willie goes into a restaurent at dinner time by the clock.  In a Frederick Taylor efficient manner Willie arranges his dinner plates so that he makes the minimum moves in a most timely manner shoveling the food into his mouth in minimum time.  Very efficient if ridiculous dining.

     He then goes to the movies.  Movies are run on a time schedule by the clock, so various aspects of rigid mechanical time are represented.  As Willie leaves the theatre he spots the hobo troupe weaving through town on experiential time.  No straight lines.  Here the two modes of time intersect.  Very cleverly done on ERB’s part.  The troupe then weaves on to their destination while Willie calls the cops on a pay phone.

     While one is not conscious of the two modes of time that ERB represents yet subconsciously a deepening interest is added to the story.  While mystified by the action I would never have guessed the significance of the time comparisons if I hadn’t read the McLuhan passage that put things into perspective.

     Also at this time ERB wrote two other investigations of Time:  ‘The Efficiency Expert’ and ‘The Land That Time Forgot.’

     I think his two most explicit investigations were ‘Tarzan At The Earth’s Core’ and its successor ‘Tarzan The Invincible.’

     Burroughs through Tarzan seems to reject civilization.  He seems to prefer experiential time to mechanical time.  In Invincible he says:

     Time is the essence of many things to civilized man.  He fumes and frets, and reduces his mental and physical efficiency if he is not accomplishing something concrete during the passage of every minute of that medium which seems to him like a flowing river, the waters of which are utterly wasted if they are not utilized as they pass by.

     His Pellucidar series creates a model to investigate the nature of Time.  Pellucidar is a model of a reversed Time and Space system.  The earth is essentially turned outside in replicating the exterior in a closed universe.  He posits a sun suspended in the interior that is perpetually shining.   While the outer earth rotates on its axis only half the surface is in light facing the sun while the other half is in darkness facing away.  Thus the appearance of change which is time is obvious.  In Pellucidar as the earth turns no portion of the inner world is in darkness although the perpetual shadow from the interior moon must have described a circular path.

     As there is no experiential time, there is no night and day, the beings of Pellucidar have no notion of the passing of Time indeed there is no passing of Time; Time as a reality does not exist.  Time is not necessary for existence; a person or thing is merely invested with a certain amount of energy.  When that energy is expended the person or thing ceases to exist.

     Thus, for example, when one winds a top it is invested with a certain amount of energy.  At peak energy it rotates rapidly gradually slowing down into a wobble and when its energy is expended it falls over and attains perpetual rest.  No time is involved although using man made mechanical means the duration of the spin can be measured.

     So, in the universe at large.  It is quite clear that Burroughs has Einstein in mind.  In Invincible he says:

…but though Time and space go on forever, whether in curves or straight lines…

     One can’t mention curved space without being familiar with Einstein.  He is thus offering an alternative to Einstein’s notion of the fabric of Time and Space.  There can be no fabric of time and space as time has no objective existence.  It is a contruct to serve the needs of man.  The sun, for instance, came into existence with a certain amount of potential energy.  Barring accidents, that energy will be expended at a certain rate just like the top and when that energy is fully expended the sun will follow whatever course the death of suns follow.  There is no time involved, hence no time-space continuum and no fabric of time and space.

     McLuhan says essentially the same thing.

     So, ‘Tarzan At The Earth’s Core’ is a demonstration of the fallacy of Einstein’s notion.

     Moving on to ‘Tarzan The Invicible’ Burroughs then has Tarzan dealing with the notion of terrestrial time.  As McLuhan notes, the notion of a time to eat arose with clocks; Tarzan dispenses with the notion of a time to eat eating only when he is hungry.  There are no clocks in Tarzan’s Africa.  As Burroughs says an individual has all the time in the world.

     Of all the vast resources that Nature had placed at their disposal, she had been most profligate with Time, since she had awarded to each all that he coud use during his lifetime, no matter how extravagant of it he might be.  So great was the supply of it that it could not be wasted, since there is always more, even up to the moment of death, after which it ceased, with all things, to be essential to the individual.  Tantor and Tarzan were therefore wasting no time as they communed together in silent meditation.

     One has all the time one needs until the day one dies then one no longer has need of time.  In other words, the organism’s energy has been expended and the husk falls to earth.

     So Tarzan is active when necessary, such as hunting for food or fighting and lazes around when activity is unnecessary.  Perfectly balanced and happy according to Burroughs.  OK for the jungle, I suppose, but I’ve got things to do such as writing stuff like this but then that is only how I dispose of the energy left in my organism during the time remaining.  With other media such as electric lights I am not bound by the diurnial cycle being freed from that experiential limitation.  One only has to sleep when one is tired.  Time means nothing to me either.  With stores open around the clock I can even buy groceries when the mood hits me.  Other items can be purchased on the internet at any time of day.  So, technology has freed us from many of the restraints of what civilization is pleased to call time.

     So, when reading Burroughs one should always bear in mind what time means to him and how various notions of time relate to the story.  Obviously in Invincible while Tarzan is attempting to live on experiential time the Revolutionaries are living by the clock and calendar.  Thus the story is also the tale of the clock or two time systems.

     I knew there are reasons I like Burroughs other than interesting stories; complexities like the nature of time are one of the extras if one can only discover and realize them.  Now, I really have to work on the nature of slavery in the Corpus.

Albion Winegar Tourgee And Thomas Dixon Jr.

     The conflict between the North and South is the central conflit of United States history.  Whether the Civil War was fought to preserve the Union or over slavery the African issue was the central problem of the country.  The aftermath of Reconstruction was and has been devastating to US history.  Mark Sullivan comments the Reconstruction period in Our Times, Vol. III. He is writing c. 1930:

Hardly to this day has any unbiassed summation been made of the destruction that the North visited upon the South.  Rarely has any conqueror in history been so ruthless- by comparison, the treatment of Germany by the Allies was the rebuke of a complaisant parent to a naughty child.  The North, by abolishing slavery, wiped out five billion dollars’ worth of the South’s property.  That was but the beginning.  Abolition of slavery was the complete destruction of the South’s economic system, land in the South was made valueless.  Then the North, by conferring suffrage on the negro, set the former slave in power over his recent master, and for ten years maintained him there by arms.  The very aorta of civilization in the South was more near to being completely severed than historians have commonly realized.  In the University of South Carolina, a State institution authority over which rested the legislature, a corn-field negro, barefooted, illiterate, sat in the chair and drew the salary of the Professor of Greek.  Over a period of forty years, including war, reconstruction (ironic word!) and the aftermath of both, the lamp of education in the South was saved from complete extinction only by the devotion and patience of half a dozen men.  With the other consequences went a discouragement which accepted the physical deterioration, through disease, of large portions of the rural South, as merely one detail of a fate it was useless to resist. 

    The excuse of the North was that Southern Whites had enslaved the African.  For some reason the New England States made Southern slavery an issue although those states, as Bible pounders, were not opposed to slavery in principle.  Shortly after the Civil War certain New England citizens established themselves in the Hawaiian Islands where they began to grow staple agricultural crops.  Farm labor therefore became as big a problem for them as it had been in the South.  They were not averse to establishng a contract labor system which was a form of wage slavery.  The New Englanders, some of them churchmen, saw the Chinese as  inferior coolie laborers not unlike the African.  Learning from the Reconstruction African situation in the South they were reluctant to import the Chinese as permanent residents.

     Thus the contracts of the Chinese specified that the Chinese return to China after the termination of their contracts.  This the Chinese saw no reason to do staying on as permanent residents.  Reluctant to import more Chinese the New England planters cast about for another alternative.  They settled on the Japanese.  Thus a ship sailed into Tokyo Bay and the Planters forcefully abducted, kidnapped, a hundred odd Japanese from Yokohama taking them back to Hawaii where they were put to work.

     So we may assume that the New Englanders were not entirely sincere in their objection to Southern slavery.

     In addition during the Grant administration while Reconstruction was in progress the annexation of San Domingo or Haiti was proposed.  Under the French administration of the area using African slave labor San Domingo was the richest and most productive colony in the world.  It could be made so again under American administration.  How they proposed to farm the land without African labor remains a mystery.  It could only have been achieved by some compulsive means. 

     As the Africans have never worked the land of this richest of areas without compulsion one would be amused to learn the proposed solution to this pressing problem of labor.

     One can only conclude that as no region of the US objected to forced labor that truly the Union was the reason for the Civil War.  The reason for Reconstruction has to be explained otherwise.

     The next problem is the nature of the African.  Nowhere in the world without an overawing show of force were the Africans docile.  The history of Africa is perpetual genocidal, tribal warfare.  The Africans had the very reasonable attitude that the way to treat an enemy was to stamp them flat.  Exterminate them.

     The attitude is apparent everywhere in Africa today most obivious at the moment in Zimbabwe and South Africa.

     In Haiti at the end of the eighteenth century the small number of French planters proved unable to control the overwhelming number of Africans, the latter rising up and defeating their owners.  In this action known as the San Domingo Moment the White males were exterminated to the man while the females were given the option of sex slavery or rape and death.

     One might say this was race hatred but I say no.  The response was no different than any other tribal conflict in Africa; the difference in Haiti being merely that the French were White.

     In the US the White Planters managed the Africans by the threat of slightly superior numbers while overawing the Africans into if not total submission something very nearly so.  Thus the character the North gave the Africans in the South was at complete variance with the worldwide reality.

     The North took the forced submission of the African in the South that produced a seemingly submissive inoffensive, harmless type of being the actual nature of the African.  Tourgee refers to Africans as ‘poor innocents.’  Northerners believed that the lack of apparent intellectual capability was due to ill treatment and the lack of opportunity for education.  So the real question is who was right about the relative capability of the African to the Caucasian?  The North or the South?  This problem is important and has to be dealt with.

     We are told that the African was first to evolve as a Homo Sapiens from the Last Hominid Predecessor.  That was c. 150,000 years ago.  Had the African not been disturbed by outside peoples he would be living today as he was when he evolved so long ago.  Many peoples have visited sub-Saharan Africa, that is to say, Black Africa, over the last few millennia.  Phoenicians and Carthaginians visited sub-Saharan Africa both overland and on voyages around the coasts.  Greek traders visited the source of the Nile, identifying the Mountains of the Moon while Romans established trade routes across the Sahara.  The Arabs established contact beginning in the seventh century at least while Malays from Indonesia established themselves on Madagascar while penetrating into the continent itself making settlements about the year +1000.

     All influences were absorbed by the Africans without any serious changes to their intellectual or social organization.  Europeans established stronger settlements in Africa ruling Africa for a hundred years or more.  They have been or are being expelled from Africa while most notably in Zimbabwe and South Africa Africans are destroying any traces of European civilization and reverting to their ancestral ways.  Only a liberal could deny these obvious facts.

     The African capability for civilization was fixed one hundred fifty thousand years ago.  The African mind is incapable of permanently adjusting to any higher level of civilization.

     The Southern Planters in daily contact with Africans had this fact impressed upon them continuously.  The mind is not so elastic that it can escape its evolutionary limitations.

     As an example I quote Rudyard Kipling from his American Notes of 1889:

     The Americans once having made them (the Africans) citizens cannot unmake them.  He says, in his newspaper, they ought to be elevated by education.  He is trying this; but it is like to be a long job, because black blood is more adhesive than white, and throws back with annoying persistence.  When the negro gets a religion he returns directly as a hiving bee, to the first instincts of his people.  Just now a wave of religion is sweeping over some of the Southern States.  Up to the present two Messiahs and a Daniel have appeared and several human sacrifices have been offered up to these incarnations.  The Daniel managed to get three young men, who he insisted were Shadrach, Meshach and Abednego, to walk into a blast furnace; guaranteeing non-combustion.  They did not return.  I have seen nothing of this kind, but I have attended a negro church.  The congregation were moved by the spirit to groans and tears, and one of them danced up the aisle to the mourners bench.  The motive may have been genuine.  The movements of the shaken body were those of  Zanzibar stick dancers, such as you see at Aden on the coal boats; and even as I watched the people, the links that bound them to the white man snapped one by one and I saw before me- the Hubsha (the Woolly One) praying to a god he did not understand.  Those neatly dressed folk on the benches, the gray-headed elder by the window, were savages- neither more nor less.  What will the American do with the negro?  The South will not consort with him….The North is every year less and less in need of his services.  And yet he will not disappear.  His friends will urge that he is as good as a white man.  His enemies…it is not good to be a negro in the land of the free and the home of the brave.

     Of course the Liberal will say that Kipling does not observe accurately and that HE is a ‘bigot.’  Nevertheless  if one looks at locales in the United States where the African dominates such as Mississippi, Detroit, Pontiac, Flint, Saginaw, Chicago, New Orleans, what does he find?  A replica of Lagos or Zimbabwe.  A return to ancestral ways.

     I’m not one to quote IQ scores because they only prove what is obvious to the naked eye.  Genetic studies prove that as Homo Sapiens continues to evolve, the African who, as a species, is fully evolved, will only continue to fall further and further behind.  This may not be his fault but it remains a fact.

     To counter these facts the Liberal merely says that a hundred fifty thousand years isn’t enough time to make an accurate assessment; we must be patient.

     Thus when the Civil War ended and Reconstruction began Albion Winegar Tourgee went South with his prejudices as a carpetbagger to try to place the African over the Southern White.

     Tourgee was an honest man who sincerely believed that he was doing right by punishing the White while trying to impose the African on him.  Tourgee moved back North after Reconstruction and took up his pen to become a successful novelist.  Among his works were two novels recounting his experiences and opinions during Reconstruction.  The novels are:  A Fool’s Errand by One Of The Fools and Bricks Without Straw.  They are both reasonably good novels although the latter is more or less a strike off of the former but for my tastes a better story and novel.

     It is in A Fool’s Errand that Tourgee tackles the problem more head on.  Completely disrgarding the character of the African in Africa or Haiti he takes the paternalistic Liberal approach that he is dealing with innocent little children who need his protection.  This attitude is actually only a variant on the Southern.  His is a good Northern Charlie compared to the bad Southern Charlie.

     His anlysis of the Southern attitude  is quite accurate and well thought out; his solutions are faulty.  A Fool’s Errand is well worth reading to contrast the two viewpoints.  His own pretensions of innocence and superiority to the Souterners is revolting.  He should have known of Grant’s plans to annex Haiti that should have given him an intimation of the vulnerability of Northern pretensions.  I’m sure he probably wasn’t aware of Puritan doings in Hawaii and Japan.

     Slavery is detestable, I myself have no problems with that although firms like Nestle’s and Starbuck’s are accused of benefiting from slave labor in the chocolate and coffee businesses.  That means that you and I enjoy the fruits of slave labor with our coffee and chocolate.  Those big screen TVs we all covet so much are made by slave labor in China.  Tourgee if he had thought about it would have noticed that the African franchise he was attempting to force on Southern Whites was denied Africans in his home State of Michigan and nearly universally among all parts of the Northland and West.  Kipling writing a few years later than Tourgee was speaking accurately.

     Tourgee was indignant at what, as he puts it, the Southern Planter had done to the African.  He says quite plainly that there was no punishment too severe for the Southern White nor should it end quickly.  He virtually proclaims the need to boil the Southern White in oil.  This seems extreme in a world where slavery was rife most especially on the African continent.  He might have put just a little of the blame on those greedy African chiefs who sold their people into bondage for filthy lucre.

     He might also have noted the Israelite Solomon who when he ran short of money to finance his temple to his god gathered together numbers of His people and sold them into slavery to get on with the building of the House Of The Lord.

     Tourgee’s novels went unanswered while selling well for a decade or two.  But then Thomas Dixon Jr. took up the cudgels on the behalf of the South and told their version of Reconstruction in his trilogy of The Leopard’s Spots, The Clansman and The Traitor.  Of course Liberals who control the seminaries of their religious system sometimes referred to as the American University System, dismiss Dixon as a stone cold bigot and ‘racist.’  One suspects without ever having read him which is of no consquence as they pay no attention to the other side of the story once their minds are made up.

     As Dixon points out, those Puritan sea captains made a fortune or two out of the slave trade, the profits of which returned North to finance Puritan bigotry and possibly large bequests to Harvard University.  Puritan cotton mills processed the cheap slave produced crop without worrying too much about its provenance.  Dixon gives numerous examples of the hypocrisy of the New Englanders.

     Slavery of any sort past or present cannot be justified but it was that very cotton that caused slavery to blossom and extend into Alabama and Mississippi.  The institution then ran into the unique State of Louisiana.

     Louisiana and more specifically New Orleans had a history dating back to the French Caribbean plantations, in fact, New Orleans was part of the French circle but a remote outpost in relation to the British colonies of the East Coast.  As on Haiti and other French islands freed Africans were allowed full citizenship privileges including owning slaves.  Thus, as the American settlers moved West after 1793 and the invention of the cotton gin becoming mere frontiersmen the closer they got to Louisiana, where the African, French and mixed races already were.  Louisiana Africans, as in Haiti, were slave owners.

     As W.E.B. Du Bois points out but gives no reasons for it, slavery in Louisiana where Africans were influential was of a different character than in the East.  The East was as benevolent a form of slavery as is possible while in Louisiana as Du Bois himself points out the African owners preferred to work slaves to death, fhen buy replacements.  This in turn created a market for slave breeders who arose in Kentucky.

     The breeding of Africans for slaves was especially repellent to American sensibilities but had slavery continued public opinion would have gotten used to it as it gets used to every other perversion.  It can however be no coincidence that slave breeding occurred just up river from the slave consuming States of Mississippi and Louisiana.

     I mention this matter only to show that the subject of slavery is not monolithic but much more complex than normally discussed.

     Both Tourgee and Dixon write about affairs in North Carolina on the East Coast.  This differentiation should not go unnoticed.  I suspect that a very large proportion of the illegal importation of slaves that occurred after 1800 was done through ports in Louisiana and Texas far from the central authority.  If that should be true then the character of slaves fresh from Africa between, say, 1850 and 1860 would be much different than those Tourgee was familiar on the settled East Coast.

     Tourgee, convinced that the Africans were gentle, innocent people, was blind to the outrages committed by both carpetbaggers and the more truculent Africans many of whom wore the Union uniform with the full backing of the Federal government which was bent on persecuting Whites.

     Dixon then whose credibility the Liberals wish to destroy writing twenty years or so after Tourgee and probably in reaction to him wishes to give the Southern side of the Reconstruction story.  He is much more realistic and sympathetic than Tourgee.  The latter writes both his novels with nary a reference to the radical reconstruction of the insane abolitionists in Congress like Stevens and Stanton who quite literally wished to see Southern Whites exterminated ‘root and branch’ a la the San Domingo Moment and the entire South given over to the Africans.  As Tourgee himself said, they believed there was no punishment too severe for the Whites.

     One need not wonder how Tourgee would view the White genocide occurring in Zimbabwe and South Africa today as his current Liberal counterparts applaud lustily.  In that light one shudders to think what will happen in the US if these Liberal assassins are not displaced before they seize the government in the Stalinist style and initiate the genocide of Whites they are currently advocating  which one assumes will include themselves.

     To understand the problem, the attitude among both Liberals and Africans from the Civil War/Reconstruction period that persist through today a reading of Tourgee, especially A Fool’s Errand, and Thomas Dixon would be some time well spent.
